The Sister Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 02 - The Sister Who Knew Too Much

Emma laughed first.

It was too quick.

Too bright.

“Claire, please. Don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Turn this around because you got caught.”

Claire stood beside the table with sauce drying in her hair and a forged document in her hand.

She had never felt more exposed.

She had also never felt more certain.

Daniel looked between the two women.

“Emma, what is she talking about?”

Emma’s expression softened immediately.

It was a talent Claire had watched for years.

Emma could become wounded faster than most people could become angry.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I’m trying to understand this just like you are.”

Robert pushed his chair back.

“Daniel, I asked where you got the document.”

Daniel finally looked at him.

“It was left in my office.”

“By whom?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire almost smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the lie was so obvious.

She turned to Emma.

“What time did you go to Daniel’s office yesterday?”

Emma’s eyes sharpened.

“I didn’t.”

“You signed into the executive floor at 6:42 p.m.”

A pause.

Daniel frowned.

“How would you know that?”

Claire looked at him.

“Because three weeks ago I asked building security to preserve access logs.”

The silence changed.

Emma sat back.

“Why?”

Claire looked at Robert.

He gave the smallest nod.

That was enough.

“Because someone has been moving money through three shell vendors for almost eleven months.”

Daniel’s anger faltered.

“What?”

“Small amounts at first. Then larger ones.”

Claire laid the forged paper flat.

“The company lost more than two million dollars, Daniel. But not through this transfer.”

He stared at the number.

Claire continued.

“The real transfer moved reserve funds into a protected escrow account after Robert and I discovered unauthorized vendor payments.”

Daniel looked at Robert.

“You knew?”

“I advised her to secure the money before whoever was doing it could reach the rest.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“You went behind my back?”

Robert’s voice hardened.

“We came to you twice.”

Daniel blinked.

Claire felt the old hurt return.

“You were in Tokyo the first time. The second time, Emma intercepted the board packet.”

Emma stood.

“That is a lie.”

Robert looked at her.

“No, Emma. That is what the courier record shows.”

Claire watched her husband’s face.

There it was.

The first crack.

Not belief.

Not yet.

But doubt.

Daniel looked at Emma.

“You told me Claire had been hiding company documents.”

“She was.”

“She was investigating missing money.”

Emma pointed at Claire.

“She wants you to believe that because she knows how this looks.”

Claire folded her arms.

“Then show Daniel the complete transaction history.”

Emma hesitated.

Half a second.

Long enough.

Daniel saw it.

“Emma?”

“I don’t have it with me.”

“You’re CFO.”

“I said I don’t have it with me.”

Robert reached for his phone.

“I do.”

Emma’s head snapped toward him.

Robert opened a secure document folder.

“Every payment. Every vendor. Every date.”

Daniel’s breath slowed.

Claire could see the fight inside him.

For years, Emma had been his sister, his oldest ally, the person who stood beside him after their father died.

Claire understood why truth was harder for him than anger.

But understanding did not erase what he had done.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?”

Claire’s eyes burned.

“I was trying.”

She glanced at the food on her dress.

“You chose not to listen.”

Then she turned and walked toward the door.

Daniel called her name.

She stopped but did not turn around.

Behind her, Emma said, “Let her go.”

Claire finally looked back.

Emma was not looking at Daniel.

She was looking at the forged paper.

And in that moment Claire knew the missing money was only part of the story.

May you like

Emma was afraid of something else.

Something much bigger.
