What Daniel’s Father Left Behind

Chapter 04 - What Daniel’s Father Left Behind
At eight the next morning, Claire entered the old Bennett executive suite.
Robert unlocked the door.
Dust had settled along the windowsill, but the room still smelled faintly of cedar and old paper.
Daniel’s father, Thomas Bennett, had died suddenly of a heart attack in this room.
At least that was the version everyone knew.
Claire had met him only twice before the wedding.
He had been formal with her.
Not unkind.
Simply difficult to read.
Robert walked behind the desk and opened the bottom drawer.
Inside was a black ledger.
No computer files.
No flash drive.
Just paper.
Thomas Bennett had trusted paper.
Claire opened the cover.
Dates.
Transfers.
Initials.
Notes.
She turned pages slowly.
Then she found a name.
EMMA.
Beside it: Advancement approved against future distribution.
The amount was enormous.
$1,800,000.
Claire looked at Robert.
“Emma borrowed money from the company?”
“From her father.”
“For what?”
Robert shook his head.
“She never said.”
Claire turned another page.
The following year, another entry.
EMMA — $600,000.
Then another.
$400,000.
Claire whispered, “Daniel knows none of this.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Thomas asked me not to tell him unless the debt threatened the company.”
Claire stared at him.
“And now?”
“Now it has.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
His tie was loose, his face gray from lack of sleep.
He looked at Claire.
She looked back.
Neither moved.
Finally he said, “I’ve been calling you.”
“I know.”
His eyes dropped.
“I’m sorry.”
The words were quiet.
Claire expected satisfaction.
Instead she felt exhausted.
“For which part?”
He flinched.
“For all of it.”
“That’s not specific enough.”
Robert stepped away.
“I’ll give you two a minute.”
Claire stopped him.
“No. Stay.”
Daniel looked hurt.
That hurt her more than she wanted to admit.
But trust did not return because someone finally understood they had broken it.
Claire pushed the ledger across the desk.
“Your sister took nearly three million dollars from your father.”
Daniel stared at the numbers.
“No.”
Robert said nothing.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew Thomas had advanced money to her.”
“And you never told me?”
“Your father believed she would repay it.”
Daniel laughed once.
A broken sound.
“My father believed everyone could be fixed.”
Claire watched him read.
Then Daniel turned the final page.
A handwritten note appeared there.
If the company is ever placed at risk because of Emma’s debt, ownership of Bennett Reserve Partners transfers to—
The rest of the sentence had been torn away.
Daniel looked up.
“Where’s the missing page?”
Robert went still.
Claire saw it.
“You know.”
Robert’s face changed.
“I know who took it.”
“Who?”
Before he could answer, Daniel’s phone rang.
Emma.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Where are you?”
Emma was crying.
Claire could hear it from across the room.
“Daniel, I need you to listen to me. Claire is not who you think she is.”
Daniel’s eyes closed.
“Stop.”
“No. You need to ask her about the baby.”
Claire’s entire body went cold.
Daniel looked at her.
“The what?”
Emma’s voice came through the phone again.
May you like
“Ask your wife why she never told you she was pregnant nine years ago.”
And just like that, the missing millions were no longer the only secret in the room.
