Chapter 8

The drive to Lake Geneva took less than two hours.

It felt longer.

Matteo sat in the back with Claire.

Luca drove.

Daniel beside him.

Thomas followed in a second vehicle.

No one spoke for twenty minutes.

Then Matteo said:

“What if she doesn’t look like Mom?”

Luca looked in mirror.

“What?”

“What if I don’t remember her right?”

Claire turned.

“You don’t have to remember perfectly.”

Matteo stared out window.

“I remember her perfume.”

Luca swallowed.

“Lavender.”

Matteo nodded.

“And orange tea.”

“She hated coffee.”

“She said your coffee tasted burned.”

“It did.”

Matteo almost smiled.

Then fear returned.

“Why didn’t she come home?”

Luca answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

“If she chose not to?”

“I don’t know.”

“What if she doesn’t love us?”

Luca’s hand tightened on wheel.

“She does.”

Matteo looked at him.

“You don’t know.”

No.

He did not.

Claire said quietly:

“Sometimes staying away can be wrong and still come from love.”

She thought of Thomas.

Matteo looked at her.

“You forgave him?”

“No.”

“Love him?”

Claire stared at the road.

“Yes.”

There it was.

Useful.

They reached the house at dusk.

No guards visible.

Mrs. Carter opened door.

She was crying.

Matteo stopped on porch.

“Is she here?”

Mrs. Carter nodded.

“Yes.”

He could not move.

Luca put hand on his shoulder.

Matteo looked up.

“Come with me.”

Luca nodded.

Always.

They entered.

Living room.

Fireplace.

A woman stood near window.

Thin.

Gray threaded through dark hair.

Scarf around shoulders.

Five years older.

But Sarah.

Matteo whispered:

“Mom.”

She turned.

Her face broke.

“Baby.”

He ran.

No hesitation.

Sarah dropped to knees.

They collided.

She held him.

Cried into his hair.

“I’m sorry.”

Matteo sobbed.

“Why?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

“I was scared.”

“Of Dad?”

Sarah looked at Luca.

“No.”

Luca stood frozen.

She looked at him.

Years between them.

Marriage.

Illness.

Funeral.

Lies.

“Luca.”

He did not move.

“Sarah.”

She stood slowly.

Matteo still holding her hand.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You watched us bury you.”

“Yes.”

“You let him grow up without you.”

Her face collapsed.

“Yes.”

Luca’s voice broke.

“Why?”

Sarah looked at Matteo.

“Because David told me if I returned, he would prove Luca was running the hospital network.”

Luca frowned.

“What?”

“He fabricated evidence.”

Daniel entered.

Sarah saw him.

“Daniel.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Everyone knows me.”

She almost smiled.

Sarah continued.

“David had accounts in Luca’s name. Transfers. Signatures. If I surfaced, he would give them to federal investigators.”

Luca said:

“I would have fought it.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because he also had evidence tying Matteo’s medical record to experimental trials.”

Matteo stopped.

“What?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Some of the blood tests when you were six were not diagnostic.”

Silence.

“They enrolled you in a study without consent.”

Luca’s face emptied.

“Who?”

“Vale Health.”

Arthur.

Of course.

“Did they hurt him?”

“Not permanently.”

Matteo whispered:

“What did they do?”

“Repeated exposure testing. Low-dose compounds.”

Arsenic?

Sarah nodded.

Luca looked ready to kill.

She continued.

“I thought if David believed I was dead, he would stop using Matteo.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

For years, perhaps.

Sarah had sacrificed presence for safety.

But without telling Luca.

Wrong.

Understandable.

Both.

Luca looked at her.

“You should have trusted me.”

Sarah cried.

“I tried.”

“No.”

“I wrote.”

“Intercepted.”

“I called.”

“Intercepted.”

“I came back twice.”

He stopped.

“What?”

“I came to Chicago.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“The park photo.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I saw you with Matteo.”

“Why not walk over?”

“I saw Vanessa.”

Vanessa.

Sarah’s face hardened.

“She was talking to David.”

Luca stopped breathing.

“Where?”

“Across the street.”

Vanessa had claimed she did not know Sarah was alive.

Maybe true.

But she knew David.

Sarah continued.

“I thought she was part of it.”

“So you ran.”

“Yes.”

“And second time?”

“Last year.”

“What happened?”

“Salvatore met me first.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“My dead father.”

“He was alive.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

“This house?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That if I returned, Arthur would kill Matteo.”

Luca’s face tightened.

“Did you believe him?”

“He showed me a surveillance photo of Matteo at school.”

Luca looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face hardened.

Their security had been penetrated.

Sarah continued.

“Salvatore said he was trying to dismantle Arthur’s network.”

“Did you believe that?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“But I believed the photograph.”

Fair.

Claire asked:

“Why come back now?”

Sarah looked at her.

“Because Thomas told me Arthur’s records were exposed.”

Thomas entered.

Sarah smiled faintly.

Old allies.

Luca said:

“Not exposed enough.”

“No.”

Sarah looked at Sarah sister’s copied files Daniel had brought.

“There’s one archive left.”

Daniel sighed.

“Of course.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“Vale master archive.”

“Where?”

“Inside the original Moretti family safe.”

Everyone froze.

Luca frowned.

“The safe in my study?”

“No.”

“The original.”

Salvatore’s first house.

Burned fourteen years ago.

Vanessa had claimed staff records burned there.

Sarah nodded.

“Below it.”

Luca looked at Claire.

Everything circled back to beginning.

Vanessa had known old staff records.

The burned house.

Her lies.

Sarah continued.

“The jewelry was a map.”

Ring.

Necklace.

Earrings.

Three data pieces.

When combined, coordinates.

Auction would separate them forever.

Maybe David ordered Vanessa to sell them to prevent map reconstruction.

Luca asked:

“Do we have all three?”

Ring yes.

Necklace and earrings at auction house.

Scheduled tomorrow.

Daniel checked.

Auction items had been removed from sale an hour ago.

“By who?”

Seller.

Vanessa?

No.

Courier authorization.

DAVID KANE.

He got them.

Luca’s face hardened.

Sarah whispered:

“Then he has the map.”

Matteo said:

“Where’s he going?”

Thomas answered:

“The burned house.”

Everyone moved.

Sarah stood.

Luca stopped her.

“No.”

She stared.

“This started with me.”

“It ends without you getting hurt again.”

She almost laughed.

“You still think you can order me around.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I think Matteo needs one parent who stays.”

Silence.

Sarah looked at their son.

Then nodded.

Claire stayed too.

Not because she wanted.

Because Matteo asked.

“Please.”

So she did.

Luca, Daniel, Thomas left.

At the burned Moretti property, David had arrived first.

But he was not alone.

An older man stood beside him.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

Luca stopped.

Salvatore Moretti.

His father.

Alive.

Salvatore smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Luca stared.

“Of course.”

David laughed.

“You finally stopped being surprised.”

Then another man stepped from ruins.

Arthur Vale.

Also alive and free despite supposed custody.

Daniel’s face changed.

“How?”

Arthur smiled.

“Institutions are expensive.”

Salvatore looked at Luca.

“You brought Thomas.”

Thomas stared.

“Wish I hadn’t.”

Arthur held Sarah’s necklace.

David held earrings.

Salvatore looked at Luca’s hand.

“Ring.”

Luca closed his fist.

“No.”

Arthur sighed.

“Then Sarah dies.”

Luca froze.

Sarah was at lake house.

Secure.

Arthur held up phone.

Live video.

Claire.

Matteo.

Sarah.

Mrs. Carter.

In living room.

A red targeting laser moved across window.

Sniper.

Luca’s face emptied.

Arthur smiled.

“Now we negotiate.”

Daniel whispered:

“Tracker?”

Luca barely moved his lips.

“Already sent.”

Before leaving Lake Geneva, Claire had insisted every person wear a hidden locator.

Luca had thought she was overreacting.

Now Daniel’s phone showed the lake house perimeter.

One unidentified device on ridge.

Sniper.

Daniel sent silent alert to secondary team.

Arthur did not notice.

Luca took the ring from pocket.

Held it up.

“What guarantees they live?”

Arthur smiled.

“Nothing.”

Honest.

That helped.

Luca looked at Salvatore.

His father’s face gave away something.

Fear.

Not of Luca.

Of Arthur.

That meant Salvatore was not in control.

Good.

Thomas shifted subtly.

Daniel saw.

They did not need to win here.

They needed time.

At Lake Geneva, Claire saw the red laser move across Sarah’s shoulder.

She did not scream.

She lowered the curtains slowly.

The laser disappeared.

Matteo whispered:

“Is someone outside?”

Claire nodded.

Sarah’s face hardened.

“Basement.”

Mrs. Carter moved first.

Matteo started to argue.

Sarah grabbed his face.

“Not now.”

He stopped.

They went downstairs.

Claire stayed near window long enough to draw the sniper’s focus.

Then dropped behind wall.

Security team arrived silently through woods.

One shot.

Then another.

Radio crackled in Daniel’s ear.

“Ridge clear.”

He looked at Luca.

Small nod.

Now.

Luca tossed ring—not to Arthur, but onto ground between men.

Everyone looked.

Thomas moved.

Daniel fired warning into concrete near David.

Luca tackled Salvatore.

Arthur reached for ring.

Thomas kicked necklace away.

Chaos.

But the jewelry map did not matter anymore.

Not entirely.

Sarah had already told them the archive location.

And Claire’s team had Sarah safe.

The negotiation collapsed.

Arthur fired.

Missed.

David ran.

Daniel caught him at stairs.

Salvatore fought Luca.

Father and son crashed into burned wall.

Salvatore whispered:

“You don’t understand what you’re destroying.”

Luca hit him.

“My son understands more than you ever did.”

Then handcuffs.

Finally.

Arthur disappeared into lower chamber.

Thomas followed.

Luca grabbed Daniel.

“Archive.”

They went down.

Before Luca left the lake house, Sarah caught his wrist.

He turned.

“What?”

She looked at Matteo across the room.

“He’s angry at me.”

“Yes.”

“You think he should be.”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled.

“At least you haven’t changed completely.”

Luca looked at her.

“You expected me to defend you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know how to be his mother again.”

“You don’t get to be again.”

She flinched.

Then he softened.

“You get to start from now.”

“That sounds worse.”

“It’s more honest.”

She nodded.

Then looked at Claire.

“Keep him here.”

Claire frowned.

“Why me?”

“Because he trusts you.”

Sarah swallowed.

“And he doesn’t trust me yet.”

That admission cost her.

Claire nodded.

“I’ll stay.”

Sarah looked at Luca.

“Bring back the jewelry if you can.”

“For Matteo.”

“Yes.”

“And the archive.”

“Yes.”

Luca started for the door.

Sarah stopped him once more.

“I do love you.”

He looked back.

Love had never been the only problem.

Fear had.

Secrets had.

Other people had.

“I know.”

Then he left.

Matteo sat beside Sarah.

Not touching.

He looked at her.

“Dad still loves you.”

“I know.”

“Do you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is everyone so bad at this?”

Claire laughed before she could stop herself.

Sarah did too.

For one minute, they were just people.

Then Daniel called.

May you like

David had the jewelry.

And Salvatore was alive.
