Chapter 5

Claire stared at the key.

So did Vanessa.

“I swear,” Vanessa whispered. “I didn’t put that there.”

Luca believed her.

Not because he trusted her.

Because the shock looked real.

Helena bent down.

Did not touch the key.

“Sarah’s.”

Luca looked at her.

“You recognize it?”

“Yes.”

“What does it open?”

Helena shook her head.

“I never knew.”

Matteo picked it up before anyone stopped him.

Tiny.

Silver.

Stamped with one number.

217.

Daniel frowned.

“Safe deposit?”

Helena’s face changed.

“Hospital room.”

Luca stared.

“What?”

“Sarah’s final room at St. Catherine’s was 217.”

Matteo went pale.

Claire looked at him.

“You okay?”

“No.”

Good answer.

Luca took the key.

“Room keys aren’t shaped like this.”

“No,” Helena said.

“But old medication lockers were.”

Daniel searched hospital plans.

“Room 217 was converted from a private oncology suite. Built-in medication cabinet.”

Luca stood.

“We’re going.”

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa said:

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“David is my father.”

“That is why you’re not.”

“He’ll use me.”

“Yes.”

“He already has.”

Luca looked at her.

“Exactly.”

Claire stood too.

Luca turned.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“No?”

“You’re injured.”

“So is everyone else.”

“Claire.”

“David mentioned me by name.”

That stopped him.

He knew who she was.

Why?

Claire continued.

“He knew where the key was.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“How?”

Vanessa stared.

“My father has people in the house.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’ve used that answer enough.”

“I genuinely don’t.”

Matteo said:

“Claire should come.”

Luca looked at his son.

“Not helping.”

“She found the inventory.”

“She also got cut.”

“Vanessa cut her.”

Vanessa flinched.

Matteo did not care.

“She won’t be safer here if David knows she has the key.”

Claire looked at Luca.

He hated when thirteen-year-olds made sense.

“Fine.”

Vanessa whispered:

“And me?”

Luca looked at her.

“No.”

Daniel assigned two guards.

Helena stayed too.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“So I’m a prisoner.”

Luca paused at the door.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You’re someone I no longer trust.”

That hurt more.

They left.

St. Catherine’s Hospital had been partly abandoned after the fire.

Newer wings operated under another company.

The old oncology section was sealed.

Daniel’s team entered first.

No alarms.

Too easy.

Room 217.

Dust.

Burn marks.

Old bed frame.

Medication cabinet embedded in wall.

The silver key fit.

Click.

Inside:

A second velvet box.

Sarah’s initials.

Matteo stopped.

Luca opened it.

A photograph.

Sarah and Matteo.

Taken secretly in a park.

Matteo was six.

Date:

Two weeks after Sarah’s official death.

His face went white.

“I was there.”

Luca stared.

“You saw her?”

“No.”

“I was at that park with Nana.”

His maternal grandmother.

Now dead.

Someone had brought Matteo near Sarah without telling him.

Maybe so she could see him.

The photograph showed Sarah watching from behind a tree.

Luca’s eyes filled.

She had been alive.

Close.

Unable to approach her son.

Inside the box was a letter.

LUCA.

He opened it.

If Helena gives you this, then David has found us.

Luca swallowed.

Matteo moved beside him.

Read too.

I am alive.

The diagnosis was real.

The poisoning was also real.

I survived because Helena switched my medication and helped me leave.

I did not take Matteo because David had already placed a tracking protocol in his medical file.

Daniel frowned.

“Tracking protocol?”

He searched.

Medical insurance monitoring.

Whenever Matteo’s record was accessed, David received an alert.

Sarah would expose herself if she took Matteo to any hospital or moved his identity.

Luca kept reading.

I believed staying away was the only way to keep David from using him against you.

I was wrong about one thing.

David is not the person in charge.

Luca stopped.

Of course.

There was always someone above.

Matteo sighed.

“Who?”

Luca read.

The person who ordered the arsenic was Sarah Moretti.

Silence.

Claire frowned.

“That’s her.”

Daniel took letter.

Maybe wording.

The person who ordered the arsenic was SARAH MORETTI.

All caps.

Luca stared.

“My wife ordered her own poisoning?”

Matteo looked sick.

“No.”

There had to be explanation.

Next line.

Not me.

The other Sarah Moretti.

Everyone froze.

Luca looked at Daniel.

“What other Sarah?”

Daniel searched family records.

Nothing.

Then Helena’s earlier words came back.

Salvatore’s accounts.

Hidden identities.

Thomas.

False records.

Claire said:

“Could be someone using her name.”

Exactly.

Luca read.

She used my identity at St. Catherine’s for three years before I discovered it.

She signed authorizations.

Opened accounts.

Accessed Matteo’s records.

I believe David answers to her.

Matteo whispered:

“Who is she?”

The final line:

Ask Salvatore about his daughter.

Luca stopped breathing.

Salvatore Moretti.

A daughter named Sarah.

Hidden.

Maybe.

Daniel called estate immediately.

No answer from Vanessa’s guards.

Second line.

No answer.

Security command.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“Mrs. Moretti and Helena are gone.”

Luca closed his eyes.

“Guards?”

“Alive. Sedated.”

“Cameras?”

“Looped.”

“Salvatore?”

Luca’s father had supposedly died years earlier.

But Sarah’s letter suggested otherwise.

Daniel looked at the old records.

“Maybe we need to stop assuming he’s dead.”

Matteo laughed bitterly.

“Yes, apparently that’s dangerous.”

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

A woman appeared at end.

Mid-forties.

Dark hair.

Pale face.

She wore a hospital coat.

Matteo stared.

Luca did too.

For one impossible second, she looked like Sarah.

Not exactly.

Enough.

She smiled.

“Luca.”

He raised his gun.

“Who are you?”

She looked at Matteo.

The boy froze.

Then she answered.

“Sarah Moretti.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“My wife was Sarah.”

The woman smiled.

“I know.”

“Who are you?”

She stepped closer.

“Your sister.”

Silence.

Then she added:

“And David Kane is my husband.”

Luca stared at her.

The woman did not move closer.

Smart.

“What proof?”

She reached slowly into her coat.

Daniel raised his gun.

“Two fingers.”

She obeyed.

Pulled out a folded birth certificate.

Father:

Salvatore Moretti.

Mother:

Caroline Vale.

Child:

Sarah Caroline Moretti.

Luca stared.

Vale.

Daniel noticed first.

“Vale Health.”

The woman nodded.

“My mother’s family owned St. Catherine’s before anyone called it St. Catherine’s.”

Matteo looked at her.

“So you’re my aunt?”

She almost smiled.

“Yes.”

“Why do you have Mom’s name?”

“I was born first.”

That answer created more questions.

Luca said:

“Did my father know my wife had your name?”

“Yes.”

“Did he arrange it?”

“No.”

“She was already Sarah when I met her.”

“I know.”

“Then why steal her identity?”

Sarah sister looked ashamed.

“Because Salvatore gave me her file after I disappeared.”

“Disappeared from what?”

“David.”

Her husband.

She looked toward the burned corridor.

“He married me because Arthur Vale ordered him to.”

Daniel frowned.

“Your mother’s family?”

“My mother’s brother.”

Arthur Vale.

One more older man behind everything.

Claire quietly asked:

“Why would David poison Luca’s wife if he wanted you?”

Sarah sister closed her eyes.

“Because he thought she was me.”

Silence.

At first.

Then she explained.

The hospital records had been merged deliberately.

Two women named Sarah Moretti.

Same age range.

Both connected to Salvatore.

David used the confusion to hide his wife’s treatment under another identity.

But Luca’s Sarah found out.

She started asking questions.

Started copying records.

Then David stopped caring which Sarah he was hurting.

Matteo’s face changed.

“So Mom became a problem.”

“Yes.”

Luca’s voice became quiet.

“And you let it happen.”

Sarah sister looked at him.

“I tried to stop him.”

“How?”

“I contacted Helena.”

“Vanessa’s mother.”

“Yes.”

“Why trust her?”

“She hated David.”

“Her husband?”

Sarah shook her head.

“Her brother.”

Everyone froze.

Vanessa had called David her father.

But Helena was his sister.

Luca laughed once.

“Of course.”

Claire muttered:

“Maybe everyone should carry family trees.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Sarah sister continued.

“Vanessa was not David’s daughter.”

Luca stared.

“Then whose?”

She looked at him.

“Salvatore’s.”

Silence.

Luca’s face emptied.

His future wife.

His half-sister.

Vanessa probably did not know.

Hopefully.

He closed his eyes.

“Anything else?”

Sarah sister hesitated.

That was never good.

“Your wife’s cancer was in remission when she disappeared.”

Matteo stopped.

“What?”

“The poisoning weakened her, but it didn’t kill her.”

Luca stepped closer.

“Is she alive?”

“I don’t know.”

“Last contact?”

“Three years ago.”

Same point everyone lost her.

“What happened?”

“She went to meet Salvatore.”

Luca stared.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Daniel sighed.

“Obviously.”

Sarah sister continued.

“He told her he had proof Arthur Vale was behind David.”

“Where was meeting?”

“Lake Geneva.”

Old Moretti summer house.

The photograph.

Sarah wife.

Helena.

Third woman.

Now obvious.

Sarah sister.

Luca looked at it.

Three women planning something while he mourned one of them.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did David know about my key?”

Sarah sister looked at her for first time.

“I don’t know you.”

Claire held up bandaged arm.

“Apparently he does.”

Sarah sister’s face changed.

“Thomas Bennett.”

Claire froze.

“My father?”

“You’re Claire Bennett.”

“Yes.”

“Thomas worked for Salvatore.”

“No.”

“He did.”

“My father was a mechanic.”

“Later.”

Claire stared.

“He drove for Salvatore.”

Daniel said quietly:

“And helped Sarah escape.”

Claire looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Sarah sister answered.

“Because I was in the car.”

Claire sat.

Her dead father had known all of them.

Of course.

The key suddenly mattered more.

Sarah sister said:

“Thomas gave that key to Helena years ago.”

Claire whispered:

“Then why was it on me?”

No one answered.

At that moment Luca’s phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Where are you?”

Her voice trembled.

“I don’t know.”

“Helena?”

“With me.”

“David?”

“Yes.”

“Put him on.”

“No.”

A pause.

“He says if you come, Matteo dies.”

Luca’s face changed.

Matteo stared.

“Why me?”

Vanessa began crying.

“Because he has your school route.”

Silence.

David had planned.

Luca’s voice turned flat.

“What does he want?”

“The ring and key.”

“Where?”

Vanessa described concrete walls.

Pipes.

Train noise.

Sarah sister went pale.

“Vale pharmaceutical warehouse.”

Daniel found it.

South Branch.

Luca looked at Matteo.

“You stay.”

Matteo said:

“No.”

“You are not negotiating.”

“Dad—”

“Matteo.”

The boy stopped.

Claire said:

“I’ll stay with him.”

Luca looked at her.

She was hurt.

But Matteo trusted her.

“Armored command vehicle.”

“Yes.”

“No leaving it.”

“Yes.”

Matteo folded arms.

Luca looked at him.

“Your vote does not count.”

“Unfair.”

“Parenting.”

For one second, the room felt normal.

May you like

Then they moved.

None of them knew David Kane had already placed someone inside the command vehicle.
