Chapter 6

The driver locked the doors.
Claire noticed first.
Daniel’s selected driver had been a woman named Ava.
This was not Ava.
Same black security jacket.
Same cap.
Wrong hands.
No wedding band.
Ava wore one.
Claire looked at Matteo.
He saw her face.
“What?”
She shook her head once.
Quiet.
The vehicle turned away from Luca’s convoy.
Matteo looked out the window.
“Dad’s going the other way.”
The driver said:
“Alternate route.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
She reached for radio.
Dead.
Signal jammer.
The driver looked in mirror.
“Don’t.”
Matteo froze.
Claire slowly lowered hand.
“Who are you?”
“No one you need to know.”
“That usually means criminal.”
Matteo almost smiled.
Driver did not.
Claire whispered:
“Where are you taking us?”
“Exchange.”
Matteo’s face hardened.
“For what?”
“Your father has something Mr. Kane wants.”
The ring.
Key.
Claire glanced at door handle.
Child lock.
Windows reinforced.
No easy exit.
Her injured arm throbbed.
She was not winning a physical fight.
So she watched.
Street signs.
Turns.
Bridge.
Train.
Industrial.
The vehicle slowed near a warehouse different from Vale site.
Decoy.
David had split targets.
Again.
Matteo leaned toward her.
“Claire.”
“I know.”
“You have a plan?”
“No.”
“Great.”
“Working on it.”
The driver heard.
“Don’t bother.”
Claire looked at front console.
Emergency release under dashboard.
Too far.
Matteo saw her eyes.
He shifted.
Driver said:
“Sit back.”
Matteo did.
Then kicked the divider.
Hard.
Driver swore.
Claire lunged for emergency release.
Her wrist screamed.
She pulled.
Rear locks popped.
Vehicle still moving.
Matteo opened door.
Claire grabbed his jacket.
“Wait.”
They were doing forty.
No.
Driver braked violently.
Both thrown forward.
He reached for gun.
Claire slammed velvet box—Sarah’s ring box—into his face.
Matteo kicked his wrist.
Gun dropped.
Driver punched Claire.
Her swollen eye exploded with pain.
She fell.
Matteo screamed.
The driver grabbed him.
Claire grabbed gun from floor.
She did not know guns well.
But she knew direction.
“Let him go.”
The driver froze.
Claire’s hands shook.
“I said let him go.”
He smiled.
“You won’t shoot.”
Matteo elbowed him.
Driver cursed.
Claire fired into dashboard.
Explosion of plastic.
Silence.
She stared at herself.
So did Matteo.
Driver released him.
Claire kicked gun away from his reach.
“Out.”
He laughed.
“You think you won?”
“No.”
She pointed.
“I think you’re walking.”
He got out.
Matteo slammed door.
Claire moved to front.
Could she drive?
Yes.
Badly.
Matteo buckled.
“Dad is going to kill us.”
“Only if David doesn’t first.”
“Comforting.”
They drove toward Luca’s location.
Meanwhile Luca reached the Vale warehouse.
Too quiet.
Daniel knew.
“Decoy.”
Sarah sister nodded.
“David likes layers.”
Luca’s phone buzzed.
Message.
Photo of Claire and Matteo in armored vehicle.
Taken minutes earlier.
HE’S MINE NOW.
Luca stopped breathing.
He called command vehicle.
No answer.
Daniel called driver.
No answer.
Then security tracking showed vehicle off route.
Luca’s face changed.
“Claire.”
Daniel shouted teams.
Before anyone moved, another message.
Ring for boy.
Key for women.
Two exchanges.
David had separated them.
Sarah sister said:
“He’ll kill someone even if you comply.”
Luca looked at her.
“Then we don’t comply.”
“How?”
He stared at ring.
Microfilm.
Paternity proof.
Probably more.
“We copy everything.”
Daniel nodded.
Sarah sister said:
“Key can’t be copied.”
“We don’t need to.”
“Why?”
Luca looked at 217.
“The key already opened what it was supposed to.”
Claire had taken it from bandage.
David thought it remained valuable.
Maybe because it opened something else.
Then a black SUV tore around corner.
Daniel raised weapon.
Vehicle stopped.
Claire climbed out from driver side.
Bleeding lip.
Matteo jumped out passenger.
Luca stared.
“What happened?”
Matteo grinned.
“Claire shot the dashboard.”
Claire said:
“I panicked.”
Luca walked straight to them.
Checked Matteo.
Then Claire.
“You were supposed to stay with security.”
Claire stared.
“Security kidnapped us.”
Fair.
Matteo said:
“She saved me.”
Luca looked at Claire’s face.
New bruise forming.
His expression hardened.
“You need a doctor.”
Claire laughed.
“I need a vacation.”
Sarah sister looked at Matteo.
“Driver?”
“Walking somewhere.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then Vanessa’s call came again.
David this time.
“Impressive.”
Luca said nothing.
David continued.
“Your maid is inconvenient.”
Claire looked at phone.
“Thank you.”
Matteo laughed.
David did not.
“Bring ring and key to warehouse twelve.”
Luca asked:
“And Vanessa?”
“Alive.”
“Helena?”
“Alive.”
“Sarah?”
There was a pause.
The hidden sister stared.
David’s voice changed.
“Which Sarah?”
He did not know Luca had found her.
Good.
Luca smiled faintly.
“Never mind.”
David continued.
“Twenty minutes.”
Call ended.
Sarah sister whispered:
“He thinks I’m dead.”
“That helps.”
Daniel looked at map.
Warehouse twelve five blocks away.
Luca made plan.
Claire and Matteo moved to federal safe vehicle with verified team.
This time Matteo argued.
Luca stared.
The boy stopped.
Sarah sister would approach rear.
Daniel north.
Luca front.
No police sirens.
Warehouse twelve.
Vanessa and Helena tied to chairs.
David Kane stood behind them.
Sixties.
Silver hair.
Doctor’s posture.
Calm.
One gun.
Several men.
Luca entered holding velvet box and silver key.
David smiled.
“Finally.”
Luca looked at Vanessa.
Bruised.
Alive.
Helena looked exhausted.
David pointed.
“Table.”
Luca placed box and key.
“Release them.”
David laughed.
“You know better.”
“Yes.”
“So why ask?”
“To hear you say it.”
David frowned.
Luca continued.
“You were never letting them go.”
David’s smile returned.
“Correct.”
Then gunfire from rear.
Sarah sister entered.
David saw her.
His face collapsed.
“No.”
She pointed a gun.
“Hello, husband.”
Vanessa stared.
Luca’s half-sister.
David’s wife.
Everything converged.
David grabbed Helena.
Gun to her head.
Sarah sister froze.
“Put it down.”
She did.
Daniel moved unseen above.
Luca watched David’s eyes.
Not on Luca.
On ring.
Obsessed.
Why?
Luca said:
“You want microfilm.”
“Yes.”
“What’s on it?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
David smiled.
“That Matteo is not your son.”
Matteo heard over comm in safe vehicle.
Claire looked at him.
He went pale.
Luca did not move.
“I already know that’s a lie.”
“You have not seen result.”
“My wife saw it.”
David laughed.
“She lied.”
Sarah sister shouted:
“David.”
He ignored her.
“The paternity result in that ring does not compare Luca to Matteo.”
Luca frowned.
“Then who?”
David looked at Vanessa.
“Salvatore.”
Silence.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
David continued.
“Sarah suspected Salvatore had substituted his own sample.”
Luca’s face emptied.
His father.
Matteo’s grandfather.
Impossible.
Sickening.
“But result?” Luca asked.
David smiled.
“Open the film.”
Daniel whispered over comm:
“Don’t trust him.”
Luca opened ring.
Microfilm.
Sarah sister had portable reader.
She looked.
Then froze.
“What?”
She looked at Luca.
“Matteo is not Salvatore’s.”
Luca exhaled.
“And me?”
Sarah read.
“99.99% paternal match.”
Luca closed his eyes.
Matteo was his.
David’s face hardened.
He had lied.
Luca looked at him.
“Done.”
David fired.
Not at Luca.
At Sarah.
Daniel shot first.
David’s gun jerked.
Bullet hit ceiling.
Daniel’s round struck his shoulder.
Chaos.
Security entered.
Vanessa pulled Helena down.
Sarah tackled David.
Luca grabbed weapon.
Within seconds, David was pinned.
Bleeding.
Alive.
He laughed.
“You think this ends with me?”
Luca leaned down.
“No.”
David smiled.
“Good.”
Then he looked at Claire through warehouse doorway feed.
“You still haven’t asked why Thomas Bennett hid the key in his daughter’s bandage.”
Claire froze.
David laughed harder.
“Because Thomas is alive.”
Before moving toward warehouse twelve, Claire forced Daniel to verify every replacement guard.
Name.
Face.
Badge.
Call-back code.
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re auditing my team now?”
“Yes.”
Matteo nodded.
“She should.”
One guard failed the call-back code.
The man reached toward his waist.
Luca drew first.
The fake guard stopped.
His phone contained a single message:
KEEP THE BOY MOVING UNTIL KANE HAS THE RING.
Matteo stared.
“They planned to take me twice?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Yes.”
Claire shook her head.
“This network is older than your security team.”
It was the closest thing to comfort Daniel was going to get.
Then Claire’s own phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Thomas Bennett.
Alive.
Older.
Standing outside the Moretti estate that morning.
Below it:
ASK YOUR FATHER WHY SARAH CHOSE YOU.
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel said:
“David is feeding us pieces.”
Claire stared at the image.
“This piece is real.”
“How do you know?”
“That’s my father.”
Sixteen years had changed his face.
Not enough.
Matteo looked at her.
“You okay?”
Claire laughed softly.
“No.”
“Good answer.”
Then David called.
Warehouse twelve.
Twenty minutes.
Everything moved again.
In the replacement vehicle, Matteo sat directly behind Claire.
No one had told him to.
He had decided.
Luca noticed when checking the mirror.
Protective positioning.
A child copying adults.
That bothered him.
“Matteo.”
“What?”
“You don’t have to protect Claire.”
The boy frowned.
“She protected me.”
“That doesn’t make it your job.”
Matteo looked at Claire.
She smiled faintly.
“He’s right.”
“I hate when he’s right.”
“So do I.”
Luca almost smiled.
Then Matteo said:
“I just don’t want anyone to grab her again.”
Silence.
Claire looked out the window.
Luca’s face hardened.
“No one will.”
Claire turned.
“You can’t promise that.”
He met her eyes in mirror.
“No.”
Then corrected himself.
“But I can promise I won’t pretend danger isn’t there.”
That was better.
May you like
Claire nodded.
So did Matteo.
