Chapter 2

Nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

Daniel brought the case into the study.

Black leather.

Combination lock already bypassed.

Inside were medical files.

Sarah Moretti.

Five years of oncology treatment.

Lab reports.

Prescription logs.

Hospital notes.

Luca stared.

“These were sealed.”

Daniel nodded.

“Family counsel kept originals in secure storage.”

“Then what are these?”

“Copies.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I found them after we got engaged.”

“Where?”

“Your mother’s office.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“My mother’s office has been locked for seven years.”

“I had the key.”

“How?”

She did not answer.

Matteo stood beside Claire.

He looked small now.

Not thirteen.

Seven.

The age he had been when Sarah first became sick.

Luca saw him.

“Matteo, you don’t have to stay.”

“I’m staying.”

“Buddy.”

“I’m staying.”

Luca nodded.

No more adults deciding what truth children could survive.

He opened the first file.

Sarah’s diagnosis.

Expected.

Second.

Treatment.

Expected.

Third.

Medication changes.

Then he stopped.

A handwritten note.

DO NOT GIVE PATIENT THE ORIGINAL LAB COPY.

Luca looked at Daniel.

“Who wrote this?”

Daniel checked.

“Initials D.K.”

Vanessa looked away.

Luca noticed.

“Who is D.K.?”

No answer.

Claire said quietly:

“Dr. Kane?”

Vanessa turned toward her.

Too fast.

Luca looked at Claire.

“You know that name?”

“I saw it on one of the auction papers.”

“Why would a doctor be on auction papers?”

Claire swallowed.

“It wasn’t the same paper.”

She reached into the safe.

At the back was a slim folder nobody had noticed.

Matteo had found it tucked beneath Sarah’s ring tray.

Inside:

A hospital bill.

Private consultation.

Dr. David Kane.

Three months before Sarah’s death.

Luca stared at Vanessa.

“Kane.”

She closed her eyes.

“Your maiden name is Bellini.”

“No.”

Luca stepped closer.

“Who is David Kane?”

She whispered:

“My father.”

Silence.

Matteo looked between them.

“You said your dad died.”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“He did.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Luca stared.

“You told me your father died when you were nineteen.”

“I lied.”

Daniel muttered:

“Finally, a simple answer.”

Luca ignored him.

“Why did your father treat Sarah?”

“He didn’t.”

“His name is in her records.”

“He consulted.”

“About what?”

Vanessa looked at Matteo.

Luca stepped between them.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“What did your father do to my wife?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why hide the files?”

“Because they look bad.”

Luca laughed once.

“That is not a defense.”

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“My father was a specialist in environmental toxicology.”

The room went still.

Luca frowned.

“Sarah had cancer.”

“Yes.”

“What does toxicology have to do with it?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Her tests showed something else.”

Matteo whispered:

“What?”

Vanessa started crying.

Luca’s face hardened.

“Tell him.”

She shook her head.

“Tell him.”

“Arsenic.”

Silence.

Claire felt the room tilt.

Matteo stared.

“What’s arsenic?”

Luca’s face had gone blank.

Daniel answered carefully:

“A poison.”

Matteo looked at his father.

“Mom was poisoned?”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No. No. Not necessarily.”

Luca turned.

“Necessarily?”

“Trace exposure can come from water. Old materials. Treatments.”

“Was Sarah exposed?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Luca grabbed the lab page.

Numbers.

Repeated elevated arsenic.

Months apart.

“Why did no one tell me?”

“I don’t know.”

“You have the records.”

“My father gave them to me.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Why?”

“Because he was scared.”

“Of who?”

She said nothing.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

“Who was he scared of?”

“My mother.”

Everyone froze.

Luca frowned.

“Your mother?”

Vanessa nodded.

“She worked in the Moretti house.”

Claire’s skin prickled.

“What was her name?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Helena Bellini.”

Daniel searched quickly.

His face changed.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“Helena Bellini was Sarah’s private nurse.”

Luca stopped breathing.

Matteo stared.

“My mom’s nurse?”

“Yes.”

He remembered.

A woman with blonde hair.

Soft voice.

Always bringing tea.

Always saying Sarah needed rest.

Matteo whispered:

“I knew her.”

Vanessa cried harder.

“I know.”

Luca looked at the medication logs.

“Your mother controlled Sarah’s medications.”

“She followed orders.”

“Whose?”

“I don’t know.”

“Vanessa.”

“I don’t!”

This time the fear sounded real.

Luca watched her.

Maybe truth.

Maybe not.

Daniel pulled another record.

A toxicology result.

Date:

Six weeks before Sarah died.

Result:

Critical elevated arsenic.

Recommended notification:

Immediate.

Stamped:

WITHHELD AT FAMILY REQUEST.

Luca stared.

“What family request?”

Daniel looked at the signature line.

Empty.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Sarah knew.”

Luca turned.

“What?”

“She knew she was being poisoned.”

Matteo covered his mouth.

Luca’s voice almost disappeared.

“How do you know?”

“Because she wrote my father a letter.”

Vanessa reached into the medical case.

Pulled out an envelope.

SARAH MORETTI.

Handwriting weak.

Luca recognized it.

His wife.

He unfolded the letter.

David,

If anything happens to me, protect Matteo.

Do not tell Luca until you know who is responsible.

He will burn the city looking for someone to blame.

Luca closed his eyes.

She knew him.

Even dying.

Matteo whispered:

Luca did.

I do not believe the person poisoning me wants me dead.

I believe they want me too sick to leave.

Claire frowned.

“Leave?”

Luca stopped.

Matteo looked at him.

“Leave where?”

Luca kept reading.

I found the accounts.

The hospital transfers.

The shell charities.

I know what Salvatore built.

I know Luca does not.

If I can get Matteo out safely, I will take him to—

The letter ended.

Page torn.

Luca stared.

“Where’s the rest?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“My father only had that.”

“No.”

“You think I tore it?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t.”

Daniel examined the envelope.

“There was another page.”

Torn cleanly.

Someone had removed it.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“Who had these before you?”

“My father.”

“Anyone else?”

“My mother.”

“Helena.”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“No.”

“Sure?”

She flinched.

Good question.

“When did she die?”

“Four years ago.”

“How?”

“Fire.”

Daniel and Luca looked at each other.

Too many convenient fires.

Claire asked:

“Where?”

“Her apartment.”

“Body identified?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“No body?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Dental records.”

Daniel typed.

“Hospital file says remains were too damaged for visual ID.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Matteo stepped closer to the desk.

He touched Sarah’s ring.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“Did your mom kill my mom?”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“I don’t.”

That honesty hurt.

Matteo’s eyes filled.

Claire put one hand on his shoulder.

Luca saw.

Then looked at Claire’s injuries again.

His anger sharpened.

“You hurt her to protect these files.”

Vanessa nodded once.

“Why?”

“Because if you found them, you would start looking.”

“I am looking now.”

“I know.”

“What were you afraid I’d find?”

She looked at the safe.

Not at Luca.

Daniel followed her gaze.

Inside the safe, behind Sarah’s jewelry trays, was a narrow metal plate.

He pressed.

A hidden compartment opened.

Matteo stared.

“I didn’t know that was there.”

Neither did Luca.

Inside:

A flash drive.

One photograph.

Sarah.

Helena.

A third woman.

Standing outside a lake house.

Back labeled:

FOUR DAYS BEFORE SARAH DISAPPEARED.

Luca froze.

“Disappeared?”

Matteo stared.

“My mom died.”

Claire picked up the photo.

Sarah was thin.

But standing.

Smiling faintly.

Date stamped three days after the date on her official death certificate.

Nobody breathed.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“My wife was alive after her funeral?”

Vanessa whispered:

“I told you the files looked bad.”

Matteo’s voice broke.

“Is Mom alive?”

No one answered.

Then Daniel inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

One video file.

SARAH_FINAL.

Luca clicked.

Sarah appeared.

Alive.

Weak.

Looking directly into the camera.

“Luca, if you are watching this, then Helena failed to get me out.”

Matteo stopped breathing.

Sarah continued.

“And if Vanessa Bellini is in your house, do not trust her mother.”

Vanessa went white.

Then Sarah said:

“Most importantly—do not let Matteo go back to St. Catherine’s Hospital.”

Matteo looked at his father.

“Dad?”

The video ended.

At that exact moment, Luca’s phone rang.

Caller ID:

ST. CATHERINE’S HOSPITAL.

Before anyone moved, Matteo picked up Sarah’s ring again.

“Mom wore this every day.”

Luca nodded.

“Even in the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide something inside it?”

Nobody answered.

Vanessa finally sat down.

“My father told me Sarah had stolen family property.”

Luca stared.

“What property?”

“He never said.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed enough.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew Sarah was visiting St. Catherine’s after midnight.”

Daniel checked old driver logs.

Six late-night trips appeared.

Four while Luca was out of town.

Two while he was asleep upstairs.

Luca looked sick.

“She never told me.”

Vanessa whispered:

“She was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“My father.”

Matteo asked:

“Did Mom think I wasn’t Dad’s?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She thought somebody had changed your records.”

That changed the shape of the mystery.

Sarah had not hidden a paternity test because she distrusted Luca.

She hid it because she distrusted the system around them.

Daniel looked at the safe.

“The ring may contain the clean result.”

Exactly.

Matteo looked at Vanessa.

“You said Mom’s things were only jewelry.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You keep not knowing.”

The sentence landed hard.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

For the first time, she admitted ignorance instead of turning it into an excuse.

Luca noticed.

May you like

So did Claire.

Then the hospital phone rang.
