Chapter 1

Nobody moved.

The lock clicked behind Luca.

A small sound.

But Vanessa heard what it meant.

She was not leaving.

Not yet.

Luca placed the jewelry inventory sheet on his desk.

Then Sarah’s wedding ring beside it.

Matteo stood near the open safe, still holding the velvet box.

Claire remained between him and Vanessa.

Her injured arm trembled.

She tried to hide it.

Luca noticed.

Of course he noticed.

“Claire.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Sit down.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding through the bandage.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“She likes the attention.”

Luca turned.

His expression did not change.

“That is the last time you interrupt me.”

Her smile disappeared.

Claire sat carefully.

Matteo moved beside her.

He was thirteen.

Old enough to understand adults lied.

Young enough to still hope his father could fix what lies had broken.

Luca crouched in front of him.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Matteo looked at Vanessa.

She stared back.

Not openly threatening him.

Worse.

Warning him.

Luca saw it.

“Look at me.”

Matteo did.

“Where did you find your mother’s ring?”

“Vanessa’s dressing room.”

“Where?”

“Bottom drawer.”

“Were you searching her things?”

The boy lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Matteo hesitated.

Claire said nothing.

This had to be his answer.

Finally:

“Because I heard her talking to someone.”

Luca’s eyes sharpened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did she say?”

Matteo swallowed.

“She said the Moretti collection would be gone before the wedding.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That could mean anything.”

Luca looked at her.

Silence.

She stopped.

He turned back.

“Then what?”

“I followed her upstairs.”

“You entered her dressing room?”

“Yes.”

“And found the ring.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

Matteo looked toward the safe.

“A key.”

Luca’s face changed.

“What key?”

Claire slowly raised the brass key she had been holding.

The family-safe backup key.

Luca stared.

“That key stays in my office lockbox.”

Matteo whispered:

“It was in Vanessa’s drawer.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Luca stood.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“How did you get it?”

“Matteo brought it to me.”

“Why?”

Matteo answered.

“Because I didn’t know if Dad would believe me.”

The sentence hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.

Luca stared at his son.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

Matteo’s eyes filled.

“Because you believe her.”

Vanessa said:

“Matteo—”

Luca looked at her.

One look.

She stopped.

The boy continued.

“She said Mom’s things were old. That you wanted a new family. That I needed to stop acting like she was coming back.”

Luca went still.

Sarah had been dead five years.

Cancer.

A long illness.

A funeral Matteo remembered too clearly.

Luca’s voice lowered.

“She said that to you?”

Matteo nodded.

“When?”

“Lots of times.”

Claire looked down.

She knew some of it.

Not all.

Luca asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Matteo wiped his face angrily.

“She said you already knew.”

Luca turned toward Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

He looked back at his son.

“What else did she say I knew?”

“That you wanted Mom’s room changed.”

“I never said that.”

“That you wanted her pictures put away.”

“I never said that.”

“That you were selling the jewelry.”

“I never said that either.”

Matteo started crying.

He hated it.

He turned away.

Luca pulled him into a hug.

The boy resisted for one second.

Then collapsed into him.

Claire looked toward Vanessa.

For the first time, the woman looked afraid.

Not because Luca was angry.

Because Matteo was talking.

Luca released him.

“Anything else?”

Matteo nodded.

“The necklace is gone.”

Luca stopped.

“What?”

“Mom’s sapphire necklace.”

He opened the safe.

The velvet tray.

Empty slot.

Luca stared.

Claire whispered:

“I checked the inventory.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa had the ring.”

“And?”

“The necklace and earrings are missing too.”

Luca opened another drawer.

Empty.

Another.

Empty.

His face hardened.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You gave me permission to select jewelry for the wedding.”

“I gave you permission to wear one piece.”

“You said I could choose.”

“I said choose from the pieces I brought you.”

“That is not what I understood.”

Luca pointed at the inventory sheet.

“This says remove from family safe before wedding.”

She did not answer.

“Who wrote it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your initials are beside every line.”

“They could be copied.”

“Then why was my wife’s ring in your dressing room?”

She looked away.

Luca’s voice became quiet.

“Answer.”

“I wanted to try it on.”

Matteo’s face changed.

Claire felt him move beside her.

Luca saw it too.

“You wore Sarah’s ring?”

“No.”

“You just said—”

“I wanted to see if it fit.”

The room went colder.

Luca took a slow breath.

“Why?”

Vanessa started crying.

“Because I am marrying you in six days, Luca.”

“And?”

“And every room in this house still belongs to a dead woman.”

Matteo flinched.

Claire immediately reached for his hand.

Vanessa saw it.

Her eyes sharpened.

Luca’s face emptied.

“Do not speak about Sarah that way.”

“I am not insulting her.”

“You are.”

“I am saying I have spent two years living with a ghost.”

“No.”

He pointed toward the ring.

“You have spent two years living with my son’s mother.”

Vanessa stared.

“That is exactly the problem.”

Silence.

She realized too late.

Luca looked at her.

“What did you just say?”

Vanessa stepped back.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You said Sarah is the problem.”

“No.”

“You moved her things.”

“Because the wedding—”

“You told Matteo I wanted her erased.”

“I was trying to help him move forward.”

“You lied to my son.”

“He was stuck.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Children grieve on their own schedule.”

“You barely talk about her.”

“That does not mean I stopped loving her.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

The truth sat there.

Ugly for her.

Necessary for Matteo.

Luca looked at his son.

“I loved your mother.”

Matteo’s chin trembled.

“I still do.”

Vanessa turned away.

Claire thought that would be the worst moment.

It was not.

Daniel entered after Luca unlocked the door long enough to let him in.

Head of security.

Dark suit.

Tablet in hand.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“You asked me last month to review the east-wing inventory after the insurance renewal.”

Luca nodded.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“I found something.”

Her face changed.

“Say it.”

Daniel placed the tablet on the desk.

Auction records.

Private consignment.

Seller name hidden.

But the item descriptions matched Sarah’s missing necklace and earrings.

Luca stared.

“Sold?”

“Not yet.”

“When?”

“Scheduled for tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“Langford & Pierce.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Luca turned.

“You consigned them.”

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“The pickup was authorized from inside the estate.”

“By who?”

“Vanessa’s staff code.”

She snapped:

“My code was copied.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Maybe.”

Luca noticed the word.

“Maybe?”

Daniel opened another page.

“Courier camera.”

A still image appeared.

Vanessa at the service door.

Handing over a white jewelry case.

Nobody spoke.

Matteo whispered:

“That was Mom’s box.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

She had nowhere left to move.

Then Claire stood.

“There’s something else.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“No.”

Luca looked at Claire.

“What?”

Claire’s hand trembled as she reached into her apron.

A small receipt.

Pawn storage.

Three items.

One listed:

Women’s sapphire necklace, antique setting.

Luca took it.

“Where did you get this?”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“Under the broken glass.”

“What broken glass?”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Claire swallowed.

“When she hit me.”

Matteo stepped closer to Claire.

Luca looked at her injured arm.

The cuts.

The bruised eye.

The split skin near the bandage.

His voice went almost gentle.

“Tell me.”

Claire looked at Matteo.

He nodded.

So she did.

She had been polishing silver in Vanessa’s dressing room that afternoon.

A courier envelope fell from a drawer.

The inventory sheet slid out.

Claire saw Sarah’s name.

She did not read everything.

Just enough.

Vanessa entered.

Saw the paper.

Grabbed Claire’s wrist.

Claire tried to return it.

Vanessa demanded the safe key.

Claire did not have it.

Vanessa accused her of lying.

Then shoved her against the glass perfume cabinet.

It shattered.

Claire fell.

Vanessa took one broken piece of glass.

Not to stab her.

To frighten her.

She dragged the edge across Claire’s sleeve.

Shallow.

Long.

Again.

And said:

“Next time it won’t be the dress.”

Matteo had heard the crash.

He came in.

Vanessa stopped.

Claire lied to protect him.

Said she fell.

Later Matteo showed Claire the ring and key.

That was why they opened the safe.

Not to steal.

To return what they could.

Luca did not speak.

He walked to Vanessa.

She backed into the desk.

“Luca.”

He stopped several feet away.

“You used broken glass on her.”

“I was angry.”

“You threatened her.”

“She was going through my things.”

“She was cleaning your room.”

“I panicked.”

Luca stared.

“About jewelry?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

There.

Not jewelry.

Something else.

Luca saw it.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Search her dressing room.”

Vanessa shouted:

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“What else is there?”

“Nothing.”

“Then you won’t mind.”

She moved toward the door.

Daniel blocked it.

Luca held out his hand.

“Phone.”

She stared.

“Excuse me?”

“Your phone.”

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

Her fingers curled around the clutch purse at her side.

Daniel took one step.

She handed over the phone.

Locked.

Luca looked at her.

“Code.”

Silence.

Matteo whispered:

“0412.”

Vanessa spun.

“How do you know?”

“My birthday.”

Luca stared.

She had used Matteo’s birthday as her code.

Strange.

He entered it.

Phone opened.

Recent messages.

One contact saved as L&P.

Another saved only as S.

Luca opened S.

The latest message:

HE FOUND THE RING. MOVE SARAH’S FILE BEFORE LUCA SEES IT.

Nobody breathed.

Matteo looked up.

“What file?”

Luca scrolled.

Previous message.

THE BOY IS ASKING ABOUT THE HOSPITAL AGAIN.

Another.

CLAIRE SAW TOO MUCH. HANDLE HER.

Luca’s face changed.

He looked at Claire.

Then Vanessa.

“What hospital?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Luca—”

“What file?”

She started crying.

“Please.”

Matteo looked terrified.

“Dad?”

Luca placed one hand on his shoulder.

“Stay with Claire.”

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Search every room.”

Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t want to do that.”

Luca’s voice turned cold.

“Why?”

She stared at Matteo.

That was the mistake.

Luca saw.

“What does this have to do with my son?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Daniel’s radio crackled.

“Sir, we found a locked case in Mrs. Moretti’s closet.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“What’s inside?”

The guard answered:

“Medical records.”

Luca stopped.

“Whose?”

Pause.

Then:

“Sarah Moretti’s.”

Matteo went white.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered:

“I can explain.”
