Chapter 8

Dating Luca while co-parenting twins with his brother was absurd.

Not dangerous.

Just complicated.

Adrian hated it at first.

“Really?”

Luca said:

“Really what?”

“Sophie?”

“She has a name.”

“I know. That’s why I said it.”

Brothers.

Normal.

Sophie set boundaries.

No security inside shop.

No gifts above agreed amount.

No Moretti investment in business.

No using twins as relationship bridge.

Good.

Luca agreed.

Then violated one by sending a driver without asking.

I sent driver away.

He apologized.

Growth.

Adrian worried Sophie would become another parent role.

I said:

“No.”

Good.

Children already had enough adults.

I was Sophie.

That was sufficient.

Vanessa eventually moved out of Illinois.

Still regular video calls with boys.

They chose frequency more as they grew.

No forced redemption.

Then Marina Marin, Sofia’s sister, became aunt openly.

No more false nurse identity.

She hated Morettis.

Fair.

Still attended birthdays.

Good.

Then Luca proposed years later.

Kitchen.

No nursery.

No crib.

No silver key.

“Would you consider marrying me?”

I laughed.

“Consider?”

“Yes.”

“Good wording.”

“I practiced.”

I said yes.

Then conditions.

Prenup.

Separate business.

No automatic guardianship assumptions about twins.

Important.

If something happened to Luca, Adrian remained biological/legal parent according to court orders.

Sophie did not become replacement mother by marriage.

Good.

Twins old enough to understand.

They asked:

“Can we call you Mom?”

I said:

“No.”

They looked shocked.

Then I smiled.

“You can call me Sophie.”

Good.

Love without title.

They accepted.

Nico later called me Soph.

Annoying.

Fine.

Wedding small.

Twins ring bearers.

One carried both rings because other lost ribbon.

No hidden key.

Adrian checked anyway.

I threatened him with scissors.

Normal.

Vanessa did not attend.

Sent card.

No drama.

Then one wedding guest asked about boys’ mother.

Luca said:

“Sofia Marin was their mother.”

Simple.

No erasure.

Good.

Married life ordinary enough.

Sophie still worked.

Luca stepped back from hotel group.

Adrian built safety consulting company.

Independent.

No Moretti contracts initially.

Then eventually competitive.

Twins teenagers.

Matteo liked photography.

Nico soccer.

Neither interested in family business.

Excellent.

Then at thirteen, they requested full Project Pairs story.

Adults prepared.

Independent therapist.

Documents simplified.

They learned Vanessa lied.

Adrian hid.

Luca signed false papers unknowingly.

Cesare impersonated Carlo.

Sofia died after clinic negligence.

Hard.

Nico asked:

“Who is the bad guy?”

Silence.

Then Sophie said:

“Several adults made bad choices.”

Better.

Matteo:

“That’s annoying.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No comic-book answer.

Then:

“Did Vanessa love us?”

“Yes,” Luca said.

“Did she lie?”

“Yes.”

Both.

“Did Adrian love us?”

“Yes.”

“Did he use us to expose things?”

Sometimes, indirectly.

Adrian said yes.

Good.

Then boys decided to keep seeing Vanessa.

Their choice.

Adrian struggled.

Did not interfere.

Growth.

Then the old phone came out of evidence after appeals.

Court asked disposition.

Destroy.

Archive.

Return.

Twins decided at sixteen.

Destroy.

Good.

No surveillance relic.

The silver key?

Sophie kept? It was evidence. B-17 key. Twins chose archive maybe.

They donated it to restricted archive.

Fine.

No shrine.

Then one night Nico had nightmare.

Not warehouse.

About school.

Forgot presentation.

Sophie laughed later with relief.

Normal fears.

That was the goal.

The prenup clarified that Sophie had no automatic role in custody litigation involving the twins. Marriage to Luca did not create ownership of family issues.

The wedding venue had no family security inside ceremony space beyond agreed perimeter protection.

At thirteen, the twins heard the full story in stages over several sessions rather than one dramatic disclosure.

Adrian answered every difficult question he could and said 'I don’t know' when he could not. That mattered.

Vanessa’s video calls were scheduled by the boys as they got older, not by adult guilt.

The destruction order for the original phone included verified forensic retention so legal history survived without keeping the surveillance object.
