Chapter 5

There was no second Marco.

There was a second man using Marco’s name.

Project Pairs had not only substituted infant records.

Victor had reused identities for security contractors.

One contractor worked under MARCO DESANTIS II.

Real name:

Daniel Kessler.

Former Bellini enforcer.

He used Marco’s credentials years earlier.

Adrian’s message referred to him.

Not Luca’s Marco.

Good.

Again, names were not people.

Daniel Kessler had left blood in motel.

Not Adrian’s.

Forensics confirmed.

Adrian escaped through window.

Alive.

Kessler wounded.

Then arrested at urgent-care clinic.

He asked for lawyer.

Fine.

His phone connected Victor’s old network to current actors.

Victor was dead three years.

But Project Pairs continued.

Who ran it now?

Not Vanessa.

Not Cesare.

One attorney.

Leonard Vale.

Bellini estate counsel.

Sixty-six.

Still practicing.

He maintained false trust structures because undoing them would expose decades of fraud.

No grand ideology.

Professional self-preservation.

That was enough.

Vale had ordered Kessler to recover B-20.

Why?

Original birth logs would unravel trusts.

Then Adrian finally surrendered.

Not dramatically.

He walked into Dana Price’s office at 8:10 AM.

Coffee in hand.

No weapon.

No disguise.

Luca was not there.

Good.

Adrian gave statement first.

Hours.

Lawyer.

Then Luca was allowed in if both agreed.

Door opened.

Brothers stared.

Adrian looked like Luca but softer.

Less tattoos.

More gray.

Luca said:

“You look terrible.”

Adrian laughed.

“You got more tattoos.”

Then Luca punched him.

Once.

Immediately stepped back.

“That was wrong.”

Adrian touched lip.

“Fair.”

“No. Not fair.”

Good.

Then silence.

No hug.

Not yet.

Luca asked:

“Why six months before the twins?”

Because Adrian’s death had been staged before Sofia pregnancy became visible.

He disappeared after crash.

Then learned pregnancy while hidden.

He wanted to return.

Victor threatened Sofia.

So stayed dead.

Then sons born.

Sofia died.

Adrian blamed himself.

Vanessa moved boys to Luca.

Why not reveal?

Because Vale still controlled records and Marco/Kessler identities made security uncertain.

Fear.

Shame.

Habit.

Again.

Then he admitted something ugly.

He helped Vanessa build false pregnancy narrative.

Photoshopped images.

Doctor letters.

Private “bed rest.”

He convinced himself it was necessary.

He lied to Luca daily through intermediaries.

No hero.

Good.

Then trackers.

Adrian opposed.

Vanessa insisted.

He allowed.

Another compromise.

Then Sophie.

Did Adrian tell Vanessa to hire me?

“Yes.”

I stared.

“You used me too.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Your mother trusted me.”

“That doesn’t mean I did.”

“I know now.”

Good.

Then Luca asked:

“Why hide phone under crib?”

Adrian said:

“I needed the truth to surface without Vale knowing I’d come in.”

“So you made infants scream.”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“The tone wasn’t supposed to distress them that much.”

“That’s not an excuse.”

“No.”

Good.

Then legal status of twins.

Vanessa had been listed mother.

False.

Sofia biological mother deceased.

Adrian father.

Guardianship?

Luca had been acting parent? He believed fiancé and Vanessa were parents? Need clarify.

Actually Luca asked "my sons"—we should preserve emotional role. Maybe he believed he was legal father? In Chapter2 DNA shows not father. How could he have thought? We need explain.

Birth certificates listed Luca as father? We said Carlo witness, false mother Vanessa. Need father maybe Luca registered through manipulated assisted reproduction claims. Add now.

Adrian explained Project Pairs forged documents showing Luca as father via stored genetic material? No DNA actual. Legal acknowledgment signed electronically maybe Luca signed parent acknowledgment buried in hospital packet believing own twins. He did.

So Luca was legal father on certificate, despite not biological.

That created conflict.

Adrian biological father.

Vanessa legal mother fraudulently.

Sofia dead.

What now?

Court.

Not family decision.

Good.

Luca asked:

“Do you want custody?”

Adrian paused.

“Yes.”

Then:

“But I know wanting is not enough.”

Good.

The twins had known Luca as father for nine months.

Adrian as stranger.

You do not rip infants from attachment because DNA.

Independent child specialist.

Temporary shared visitation plan.

Vanessa removed from unsupervised access pending fraud and assault? She didn't assault Sophie physically in this story? She manipulated. Fine, legal fraud.

Luca remained primary caregiver temporarily with professional supervision.

Adrian introduced gradually.

Messy.

Healthy.

Then Vanessa’s role.

She admitted falsifying maternity.

Charges.

But also she had saved twins from Victor’s custody plan.

Both.

Court considered.

No instant villain.

Then Sophie.

I resigned as nanny.

Obviously.

Luca said:

“Okay.”

No pressure.

“Why?”

“I was hired under false pretenses.”

Fair.

Then:

“Will you stay until replacement?”

“No.”

Good.

He accepted.

Agency paid remaining wages after legal claim.

No private bonus.

Then I filed complaint against agency for undisclosed client manipulation.

Vanessa had designated me by surname due mother.

That was not normal recruitment.

Good.

Then Adrian asked to speak to me.

I said no.

Later, yes.

He apologized.

No excuses.

I asked:

“Did you know my mother died?”

“Yes.”

“Did you go to funeral?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was dead.”

Bitter.

True.

Then:

“She trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you deserve it?”

“No.”

Good.

Then he handed me one thing.

Clara’s nurse pin.

My mother had given it to him when she copied logs.

I took it.

Not evidence anymore.

Mine.

Then Price entered.

Leonard Vale had been arrested.

His seized files contained a current plan.

Subject:

TWINS REASSIGNMENT.

Meaning?

If truth surfaced, he planned to move legal parentage again.

To whom?

Cesare Moretti.

Why?

He could pass as Carlo family elder and activate another trust clause.

Children reduced to ownership instruments.

Again.

Luca looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked at Luca.

And both finally agreed on one thing.

No more family solution.

Court.

Independent guardian.

Open records.

Whatever it cost.

Adrian’s first interview acknowledged that his hidden phone scheme had manipulated household staff. He did not call it clever once investigators described Sophie’s fear.

The court appointed a guardian ad litem for the twins before any parentage change. Neither Moretti brother controlled recommendations.

Vanessa’s bond conditions prohibited unsupervised contact but allowed supervised visits because abrupt severance could harm the infants.

Sophie’s resignation took effect immediately with full wages owed. Luca did not ask her to remain for the boys’ sake.

Leonard Vale’s files showed he viewed children primarily through trust consequences. That language later became important evidence of intent.

Clara’s nurse pin had no evidentiary value after documentation. Sophie could keep it without turning family memory into public property.
