Chapter 6

One year later, Matteo and Nico had two fathers in different ways.

That was not simple.

It was also true.

Luca remained their legal father because the original acknowledgment, though fraudulently induced, could not simply vanish without considering the children’s interests.

Adrian was biological father and obtained recognized parental status.

The court created shared guardianship.

Not equal time immediately.

Attachment mattered.

Age mattered.

History mattered.

Luca hated losing nights.

Adrian hated needing permission.

Both complied.

Good.

Vanessa’s legal maternity was vacated.

She did not challenge biological truth.

She requested visitation.

Court granted supervised contact after evaluation.

Why?

Because for nine months she had functioned as mother.

Even deception does not erase infant attachment overnight.

Messy.

Good.

Sofia Marin was added to records as biological mother.

Her name restored.

That mattered most to Adrian.

Then Project Pairs prosecutions.

Leonard Vale charged with fraud, falsifying records, obstruction, conspiracy.

Kessler with assault and related crimes.

Cesare faced charges in Italy and U.S. cooperation proceedings for false certifications.

Marco DeSantis cooperated and was not treated as Vale’s alias.

His own past omissions still reviewed.

Vanessa pled to document fraud and obstruction-related conduct.

Her cooperation mattered.

Her reasons mattered.

Not excuses.

No hero.

Then River Storage closed permanently.

Evidence archived.

No dramatic demolition.

The building sold.

Independent company.

Good.

The twins’ RFID tags were removed in a hospital procedure.

Luca asked to keep them.

Then stopped himself.

“No.”

Good.

Medical waste.

Not relics.

The phone under crib went into evidence.

Later museum requested.

Everyone said no.

Good.

No public display of babies’ surveillance.

Then Sophie.

I opened my own alterations and children’s clothing repair shop.

Why not leave sewing?

Because sewing was mine before all of them.

Good.

My mother’s nurse pin stayed in a drawer.

Not on wall.

Private.

I did not become Project Pairs activist.

Did not owe history a career.

Still, when a client asked me to conceal a tracking device in a child’s jacket—

yes, that happened—

I refused.

Reported concern.

Different context.

Same lesson.

Then Luca visited.

Not often.

He brought twins once.

They were toddlers.

Matteo recognized me.

Maybe.

Reached.

I froze.

Then picked him up.

My choice.

Nico followed.

Luca laughed.

“Both?”

“Apparently.”

Echo.

Good.

No secret phone.

No hidden key.

Just toddlers.

Adrian arrived later.

Awkward.

He and Luca still argued.

Custody times.

Doctors.

Names.

Adrian wanted Moretti surname.

Luca said children already Moretti legally.

Wait they were? yes if Luca father. Sofia surname not visible. Fine.

Court kept names.

No need to use identity as territory.

Good.

Vanessa moved into a smaller apartment after release conditions.

Visited twins monthly supervised.

They knew her as Vanessa, then later “Nessa.”

Not Mom.

Not because punishment.

Because truth.

But affection remained.

Children can love multiple adults.

Then Clara’s old logs became basis for restoring identities of other Project Pairs cases.

Some adults wanted contact.

Some did not.

Some refused DNA.

Their choice.

Good.

Not every hidden child wants revelation.

Price’s office created protocol requiring consent whenever possible.

Then one case showed original mother still alive.

She declined contact.

Records corrected privately.

No reunion story.

Good.

Then Luca learned something from being deceived.

He changed Moretti family medical and trust governance.

No parentage paperwork through family counsel alone.

Independent review.

No secret trusts for minors.

No clauses tied to marriage or bloodline.

Boring.

Good.

Then the twins turned two.

Birthday.

Small.

Luca.

Adrian.

Vanessa supervised.

Sophie invited? Yes.

I almost said no.

Then went.

No press.

No family board.

Cake.

Nico smashed frosting.

Matteo cried because balloon popped.

Normal.

Adrian looked at Luca.

“Think we can do this?”

Luca said:

“No.”

Pause.

“Still doing it.”

Good.

Then one question.

Who were the boys’ godparents?

Old records falsely named Cesare and Vanessa.

Court voided.

No replacement required.

Good.

Religion should not be another trust trigger.

Then at end of party, both boys fell asleep.

One on Luca.

One on Adrian.

For once, nobody argued over whose son was whose.

They were both tired.

That was enough.

The twins’ shared-guardianship schedule changed gradually as attachment specialists monitored stress rather than following adult fairness.

Vanessa’s supervised visits were sometimes canceled by the children’s illness or routine. She accepted that parenting contact was not a legal stage for redemption.

Project Pairs victims received options: correction, sealed annotation, or no further action where law allowed. Exposure was not forced.

Sophie’s shop handbook prohibited clients from requesting hidden electronic devices in garments without documented lawful purpose.

The birthday party had no photographers beyond family phones. Images of the twins stayed private.

Luca and Adrian signed a communication protocol because texting arguments at midnight had become ridiculous.
