Chapter 10

Eighteen years after Sophie found the silver key, Matteo and Nico sat at the same dining table where Luca once questioned Vanessa.

Not for scandal.

Birthday dinner.

They were eighteen.

Adults now.

Legally.

Practically?

Debatable.

Nico still left socks everywhere.

Matteo still forgot chargers.

Normal.

A small envelope sat between them.

Court documents.

Parentage election.

Archive choices.

Trust releases.

No coercive clauses.

Independent lawyers.

Good.

Matteo opened first.

“I keep Rossi nowhere because I was never Rossi.”

Everyone laughed.

He meant no surname change. He had always used Moretti publicly under Luca. Actually story says birth false. Let's simplify: both boys had legal Moretti surname throughout.

He signed to keep Moretti.

Nico too.

Not as loyalty.

Just name they grew up with.

Birth records listed Sofia Marin and Adrian Moretti.

Luca remained adjudicated parent under separate order.

Good.

No erasure.

Then trust.

A modest inheritance from Sofia.

Another from Vanessa.

Vanessa had created education accounts with no conditions.

Good.

No silence clauses.

No marriage triggers.

No surveillance.

The boys could reject.

They accepted education funds.

Their choice.

Then archive disposition.

Silver key B-17.

Keep restricted.

Warehouse photos.

Restricted until age thirty.

RFID medical records.

Destroy identifying copies after required retention.

Good.

No museum baby pictures.

Then one final item.

The original black phone.

It had been ordered destroyed years earlier, but forensic image remained.

Court asked if twins wanted copy.

Both said no.

Good.

Not every truth needs to be carried forever.

Dinner.

Adrian.

Luca.

Sophie.

Marina.

Vanessa on video call from California.

Yes.

Complicated.

No one pretended history vanished.

But no one needed to replay it every birthday.

Vanessa said:

“Happy birthday.”

Nico:

“Thanks.”

Matteo:

“Thanks.”

Then awkward pause.

Normal.

She smiled.

“Okay. I’ll go.”

No guilt.

Good.

After call, Adrian said:

“You okay?”

Both nodded.

Then Nico asked Luca:

“Do you remember when Sophie held both of us?”

Luca stared.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You were screaming.”

Matteo:

“Which one?”

“Sophie said Nico started.”

Nico looked offended.

“Fake news.”

Sophie laughed.

Then Luca looked at her.

“Why were you holding both of my sons, Sophie?”

Same words.

She froze.

Then smiled.

“They were crying.”

“At same time?”

“Yes, sir.”

Everyone laughed.

Eighteen years.

The line belonged to them now.

Not fear.

Memory.

Then Matteo brought something from pocket.

A tiny silver key.

Replica.

Not original.

He had made it in metal shop.

Stamped:

B-17.

Luca groaned.

“No.”

Matteo handed it to Sophie.

“For nursery cabinet.”

“There is no lock.”

Exactly.

Everyone laughed harder.

Then Sophie held it.

Light.

Harmless.

A joke.

That was healing too.

Later, twins left for separate colleges.

Matteo studied photography and documentary ethics.

Nico sports medicine.

No Moretti business.

Fine.

Adrian pretended not to care.

Luca actually did not pressure.

Growth.

Sophie’s shop had expanded.

She still altered wedding dresses.

Sometimes hidden pockets.

Never hidden evidence.

Good.

One night, a bride asked her to sew a phone into a dress.

Sophie stared.

“For livestream.”

“No.”

Bride laughed.

“Fair.”

Normal.

At home, Luca found replica key on counter.

He held it up.

“Should I be worried?”

“Yes.”

“What does it open?”

“Your trust issues.”

He laughed.

Then put it in junk drawer.

Not safe.

Not vault.

Junk drawer.

Perfect.

Years later maybe it would be thrown away accidentally.

Also fine.

The original evidence remained where it belonged.

The memories remained where people chose.

The boys had names that were theirs.

Parents who did not fit one box.

A dead mother remembered accurately.

A woman who lied and loved them both.

Two brothers who failed and stayed.

A seamstress who refused to become inherited evidence.

And a house that finally stopped hiding phones under cribs.

That night, Luca checked the nursery.

No babies now.

Room converted into study.

White cabinet still there.

No lock.

He opened it anyway.

Books.

Old blankets.

One soccer ball.

Nothing else.

Good.

Sophie leaned on doorframe.

“Find anything?”

“No.”

“Interesting.”

He stared.

She smiled.

Then lights off.

Door closed.

And for once—

the only thing under the crib was dust.

The replica B-17 key was intentionally too large to fit any original lock. It was a joke, not a security risk.

The twins’ archive choices were documented by independent counsel because family members had spent too many years making decisions for children.

Vanessa’s education accounts were reviewed to ensure no conditions tied money to contact or silence.

Sophie’s hidden-pocket customers signed ordinary alteration tickets. No family lawyer, no special handling.

The converted study kept the old white cabinet because nobody felt obligated to destroy furniture just because a secret once existed nearby.

The final nursery inspection ended with Luca finding an old pacifier under a radiator. He threw it away.
