Chapter 7

Five years after Sophie found the phone, the twins were six.

They knew the simple version.

Sofia was their birth mother.

She died when they were born.

Adrian was their biological father.

Luca had believed he was their father and raised them from birth.

Vanessa had cared for them but lied about being their mother.

More truth later.

Age appropriate.

Good.

Matteo asked:

“Can two dads both be real?”

Luca answered:

“Yes.”

Adrian said:

“Unfortunately.”

Matteo laughed.

Nico said:

“Which one is stronger?”

Wrong question.

Both immediately started arguing.

Normal.

Good.

Shared custody became easier.

Not easy.

Different houses.

Different rules.

Luca stricter bedtime.

Adrian more snacks.

Court mediator no longer needed.

Progress.

Vanessa’s contact expanded.

She never asked boys to call her Mom.

Good.

She apologized when older.

Not details yet.

Then Project Pairs civil settlements.

Victims compensated.

Not everyone accepted.

Some sued.

Some wanted only record corrections.

Moretti Holdings contributed because Carlo’s biometric systems and trusts had facilitated fraud.

Bellini estate contributed more.

No Luca charity.

Formal.

Good.

Cesare eventually admitted his role.

He claimed Victor manipulated him through lifelong resentment.

Probably.

Still chose.

He died later in Italy.

Natural.

No final secret.

Good.

Marco DeSantis retired from Moretti security.

Why?

Trust damaged.

Even though he had helped Adrian.

He had hidden too much.

Independent security replaced.

Marco accepted.

Good.

Then Sophie’s shop grew.

Two employees.

One apprentice.

Written overtime.

No “we’re family” nonsense.

I remembered enough.

Luca and I became friends.

Nothing romantic yet.

Maybe never.

He came for repairs.

Paid full price.

One day brought a child’s coat.

“Tracker?” I asked.

He stared.

“Button.”

We both laughed.

Ghosts become jokes.

Good.

Adrian apologized again.

I said:

“Stop.”

He froze.

“You already apologized.”

“Yes.”

“Change is more useful.”

He nodded.

Good.

Then a school project.

Twins needed family tree.

Disaster.

Teacher gave template:

Mother.

Father.

Grandparents.

Matteo raised hand.

“My family doesn’t fit.”

Teacher said:

“Then draw your own.”

Excellent.

They made circles.

Sofia.

Adrian.

Luca.

Vanessa.

Aunt Marina.

Then crossed lines.

No hierarchy.

Nico put Sophie in “important people.”

I cried in bathroom later.

Annoying.

Then Luca found me.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You’re crying.”

“Go away.”

He did.

Good.

Later I told him why.

He smiled.

No speech.

Better.

Then one last criminal appeal ended.

Leonard Vale’s conviction mostly upheld.

Some counts reversed.

Evidence matters.

Not narrative.

Good.

The River Storage warehouse was converted into public maker space after remediation.

Sophie refused invitation to opening.

No need.

Adrian went once.

Stood where he held newborn sons in photos.

Then left.

No plaque.

Good.

Some places deserve ordinary uses.

Then twins visited later on school trip.

They did not know exact room.

Fine.

No trauma tourism.

The system reforms mattered more.

Then Vanessa sent Sophie a note.

“I chose you because Clara had courage I didn’t.”

I stared.

Wrong.

I wrote back one sentence.

“You chose me because you needed someone useful.”

There.

Vanessa replied:

“Yes.”

Better.

No romanticizing.

Then one night Luca asked Sophie to dinner.

Not evidence.

Not repairs.

I stared.

“Are you asking me out?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I like you.”

“Not because I held both twins?”

“No.”

“Not because my mother copied logs?”

“No.”

“Not guilt?”

“No.”

I thought.

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

“Maybe is not yes.”

“I know.”

The next week, I said yes.

Slow.

Public.

Boring.

Good.

The family-tree assignment became a school training example after the teacher realized many children did not fit two-parent templates.

Vanessa’s note to Sophie was not admitted into any proceeding. It was personal, not evidence.

River Storage remediation removed chemical contamination before conversion. Turning the building ordinary required physical cleanup as well as narrative change.

Luca paid full price at Sophie’s shop even after they became friends. She returned one oversized tip.

Adrian’s safety company published conflicts and refused private family work during its first years.

The twins’ laughter around old references showed safety had changed the meaning, not erased the past.
