The Hearing

Chapter 17 - The Hearing
The preliminary hearing drew cameras from three states.
Victor entered in a dark suit, without handcuffs visible to the public. He smiled at reporters as though attending a business conference.
Emma sat behind the prosecutor with Grace beside her.
Lila sat on the opposite side of the aisle.
She did not look at Emma.
The prosecution presented the recordings, forged reports, offshore accounts, and Victor’s attempt to frame Lila.
Dr. Pierce testified that he had never examined Emma.
Whitmore’s information-security director proved that the fraudulent emails originated from Victor’s laptop while Emma was in surgery.
Then Lila took the stand.
Victor watched her with the same expression he had used on Emma for years: calm disappointment, as if her disobedience hurt him more than his betrayal hurt her.
Lila admitted everything.
The money.
The affair.
The false statement to police.
The proxy plan.
When Victor’s attorney asked whether she hated him, she answered, “I hate what I agreed to become around him.”
The courtroom went quiet.
On cross-examination, the attorney suggested Lila had created the entire scheme.
She reached into her pocket and produced a folded note.
Victor had sent it through another detainee that morning.
Take the blame. I’ll protect Owen.
The judge ordered an investigation into witness tampering.
Victor’s face finally lost its polish.
He turned toward Emma.
For one second, she saw the man from the living room—the man whose power depended on everyone else being afraid at the same time.
The judge denied bail.
As deputies led Victor away, he called Emma’s name.
She did not turn.
Outside, reporters shouted questions about victory.
Emma stopped at the courthouse steps.
“This is not a victory,” she said. “It is the end of a lie. Those are not the same thing.”
That afternoon, the Whitmore board offered her permanent control and a public apology.
Emma read the letter.
Then she surprised them.
