The Boardroom Without Power

Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Without Power
The blackout lasted forty seconds.
Long enough for someone to enter the rear hallway.
Long enough for the caretaker to shout.
Long enough for Grace to grab Emma’s hand in the dark.
When the emergency lights came on, the flash drive was still in the detective’s pocket.
But Caroline’s laptop was gone.
The thief escaped through a side door.
Security footage showed a man in a maintenance uniform. His face was hidden by a cap.
Victor denied involvement.
By Friday morning, Whitmore’s boardroom was surrounded by reporters. Emma entered through the front doors with Grace and Caroline.
She wore a navy suit her mother had bought her for her first executive presentation.
Victor appeared on a wall screen from an undisclosed location.
He looked rested.
“Emma,” he said warmly. “I hope today brings you peace.”
She sat without answering.
The board counsel began the meeting.
Victor’s attorney presented the forged emails, the false medical report, and statements from two executives who claimed Emma had behaved unpredictably.
Then Caroline stood.
“We have evidence of a coordinated attempt to remove Emma Whitmore through fraud, coercion, and reputational harm.”
The full recording played.
Victor’s voice filled the room.
People always sign when they believe no one will believe them.
No one moved.
Then the video played.
Victor watched himself explain the knife plan.
For the first time, his composure cracked.
“This is edited.”
The detective confirmed the files had been authenticated.
One board member removed his glasses.
Another stared at the table.
The vote began.
Three members voted to suspend Emma.
Three voted to retain her.
The final vote belonged to Daniel Cross, a longtime family friend who had worked with Emma’s mother.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Emma’s stomach tightened.
Then he turned toward Victor’s image.
“I am sorry I believed you.”
He voted to restore Emma’s authority.
Victor disappeared from the screen before the meeting ended.
Minutes later, the detective received a call.

Victor’s car had been found abandoned near the airport.
Inside was Lila’s passport, twenty thousand dollars in cash, and a one-way ticket issued in her name.
