The Man Who Chose Her

Chapter 11 - The Man Who Chose Her

Victor had studied Emma before he ever spoke to her.

The files contained newspaper articles, financial reports, photographs from charity events, and notes about her first marriage.

One document listed her vulnerabilities.

Recently divorced.

Mother ill.

Daughter young.

Limited confidence in financial matters.

The language was clinical, as if Emma were not a person but a company waiting to be purchased.

Grace read over her shoulder.

“He targeted you.”

Emma could not speak.

She had blamed herself for missing signs. She had replayed every dinner, every apology, every moment she allowed Victor to take one more responsibility.

Now she understood that he had arrived with a map.

The plan had begun with her mother’s refusal to sell Whitmore’s manufacturing land to Meridian Partners.

After her mother died, Victor intended to obtain it through marriage.

But the company grew. The land became more valuable. He waited.

He made himself indispensable.

“He spent twelve years doing this,” Grace said.

“No,” Emma replied. “He spent twelve years living while doing this.”

That distinction mattered. Some of his kindness had felt real because perhaps, on certain days, it had been.

Predators did not remain cruel every minute. If they did, people would leave sooner.

Caroline found transaction records showing payments to Dr. Pierce’s identity, board consultants, and the anonymous source who spoke to reporters.

The evidence was strong, but not enough to stop Friday’s vote. The board’s counsel claimed the laptop could have been planted.

Victor released a public statement that afternoon.

He accused Emma of fabricating documents and manipulating Grace.

Then he announced that he would attend the board meeting remotely to “protect the company from further emotional disruption.”

Grace threw the statement across the table.

“He is still talking like the reasonable one.”

Emma picked it up.

“He needs everyone to look at my emotions instead of his actions.”

That evening, Lila called from the police station.

“I know where the original drive is.”

Emma said nothing.

“Victor did not take it from the house,” Lila continued. “He made me hide it weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“In a place he thinks you will never enter.”

Lila gave an address.

Emma recognized it immediately.

It was the church where she and Victor had been married.
