The Vow Box

Chapter 12 - The Vow Box

The church stood on a quiet street beneath live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

Emma had not entered it since her wedding.

A caretaker led her, Grace, and the detective to a small room behind the chapel. Wooden boxes lined one wall, each labeled with the names of married couples.

The church called them vow boxes.

Couples placed letters inside to open on future anniversaries.

Emma found hers.

EMMA AND VICTOR — JUNE 14.

The brass key from the station fit the lock.

Inside lay two sealed letters, a dried white rose, and a flash drive taped beneath the lid.

Lila had hidden it there because Victor believed Emma would never return to the place where she had promised to trust him.

Grace handed the drive to the detective.

Emma opened her wedding letter.

Her younger self had written about partnership, patience, and the home she hoped they would build.

At the bottom was a line that broke her more gently than the forged documents had.

I hope Grace always knows she is safe with us.

Emma folded the letter.

Victor’s envelope remained sealed.

“Open it,” Grace said.

Emma did.

The page inside was blank except for a single handwritten sentence.

Thank you for giving me the key.

Victor had written it on their wedding day.

The flash drive contained the full recordings, copies of the forged medical reports, and a spreadsheet of payments.

It also contained a video.

Lila sat in Victor’s study while he explained the confrontation he planned.

No touching, he said. No marks. We just make her afraid enough to sign.

Lila asked what would happen if Emma called the police.

Victor smiled toward the camera he did not know was recording.

Then we tell them she picked up the knife.

The detective paused the video.

“That changes things.”

Emma looked through the chapel doors toward the altar.

“Will it stop the vote?”

Caroline answered from behind her.

“Only if the board sees it before Victor does.”

At that exact moment, every light in the church went out.
