The Woman He Planned to Blame

Chapter 14 - The Woman He Planned to Blame
Victor had prepared an escape.
He had also prepared a substitute.
The cash, passport, and ticket made Lila look like the architect of the fraud.
Police questioned her for six hours.
She admitted to the affair, the proxy agreement, and the lies she told officers. She also admitted she had accepted fifty thousand dollars from Victor.
“I thought I could leave after the sale,” she told Emma through the glass of an interview room. “I kept telling myself I would fix it later.”
Emma sat across from her.
“Later is where people hide the things they are doing now.”
Lila nodded.
Her face looked older than it had on the sofa.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
The word surprised them both.
Emma had spent years forgiving before anyone changed. She had confused mercy with access.
Lila’s attorney negotiated her release in exchange for full cooperation.
She gave investigators the name of the accountant who created the shell companies and the location of Victor’s private safe.
Inside the safe, police found passports under two names, offshore account numbers, and a handwritten list of people Victor believed could be pressured.
Grace was on the list.
Beside her name, he had written:
Tuition. Loyalty. Fear of disappointing mother.
Emma read the line until the words blurred.
Victor had not loved Grace as a daughter. He had studied her as leverage.
That night, Grace sat on the kitchen floor of Caroline’s house, eating cereal from a coffee mug.
“I feel stupid.”
Emma sat beside her.
“You were a child when he started.”
“I’m not a child now.”
“No. Now you get to decide who you become after learning the truth.”
Grace rested her head on Emma’s shoulder.
The television in the next room interrupted them with a breaking-news alert.
Victor had released a new video online.
He sat in a dim room, speaking directly to the camera.
He claimed Emma and Lila had conspired to frame him.
Then he held up a sealed envelope.
“If anything happens to me,” he said, “the truth about Grace Whitmore will be made public.”
Grace went still.
Emma looked at her daughter.
May you like
“What truth?”
Grace did not answer.
