The Man Behind Marcus Vale

Chapter 09 - The Man Behind Marcus Vale

Marcus Vale had been Whitmore Group’s chief financial officer for fourteen years.

Everyone believed he worked for Julian.

That assumption lasted until federal investigators froze three offshore accounts.

Two contained almost nothing.

The third belonged to a company nobody recognized.

Calder Strategic Holdings.

Maya found the name first.

Then Sophie found the owner.

Nathan Calder.

Eleanor knew him.

Richard knew him better.

Twenty-two years earlier, Nathan Calder had been the site manager at Rivergate.

The same man who told Richard Building C was empty.

The same man whose report helped bury the truth.

He had disappeared from the Whitmore payroll months after the fire.

Now he was back.

Not as an employee.

As a ghost behind eighteen million stolen dollars.

Claire sat across from Richard in a conference room.

“So Julian didn’t invent the scheme.”

Richard looked devastated.

“No.”

“But he joined it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard stared at the table.

“Calder contacted him two years ago.”

He had evidence, Richard explained.

Old maintenance records.

Emails.

Statements proving Whitmore executives knew families were still inside Rivergate days before the fire.

Calder threatened to release everything.

Julian paid him.

At first.

Then the payments grew.

Julian began stealing from company accounts.

Marcus helped move the money.

Eventually, blackmail became partnership.

Calder invested the stolen funds.

Julian expected profit.

Instead, Calder took control.

Claire shook her head.

“So Julian framed me because the missing money was going to be discovered.”

Richard nodded.

“And because he knew you had access to project accounts.”

Claire sat back.

Her husband had not simply betrayed her.

He had studied her life for weaknesses.

Her access.

Her signature.

Her trust.

He had weaponized the shape of their marriage.

Then Richard said, “There is something else.”

Claire almost smiled.

There was always something else.

“Calder contacted me this morning.”

“Why?”

“He wants a meeting.”

“No.”

“He says he will release all Rivergate records unless I pay him another five million.”

Claire stood.

“You are not paying him.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Richard looked at her.

The old version of him might have.

The man who buried scandal.

The father who kept Julian comfortable.

The husband who let Eleanor control appearances.

Richard took out his phone.

“I recorded the call.”

Claire stared.

He slid the phone across the table.

“I sent it to investigators.”

That was the first moment Claire believed he might actually change.

Not because he apologized.

Because he did something difficult before anyone forced him.

That afternoon, Julian called Claire.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

His voice was low.

“Calder knows about Lily.”

Claire went cold.

“What did you say?”

“I said he knows about Lily.”

“What does that mean?”

“He knows Rachel kept records.”

Claire stood.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“You brought him into this.”

“I know.”

“You led him to her?”

“No.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

Julian breathed hard.

“Because he thinks Rachel gave you something.”

Claire thought of the letter.

“What does he want?”

“Whatever she left.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Julian, listen to me carefully. You stay away from Lily.”

“I’m trying to protect her.”

“You have never protected anyone but yourself.”

Silence.

Then Julian whispered, “Claire.”

Something in his voice stopped her.

“He’s not bluffing.”

The line went dead.

Ten minutes later, Anna called.

Lily was missing from school.
