The Family Dinner Nobody Planned

Chapter 16 - The Family Dinner Nobody Planned

A year after the gala, Lily asked for a birthday dinner.

Nothing unusual.

Pizza.

Chocolate cake.

Eight candles.

The unusual part was the guest list.

Anna.

Claire.

Eleanor.

Richard.

Sophie.

Daniel.

And, by video call, Julian.

Anna objected first.

“No.”

Lily crossed her arms.

“It’s my birthday.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“I want to see him.”

Claire looked at Anna.

The room went quiet.

Lily was older now.

Still a child.

But children were not empty spaces adults could fill with convenient versions of the truth.

A therapist helped prepare the call.

Julian appeared on the screen.

He looked thinner.

His hair was shorter.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Lily looked at him.

“Hi.”

Julian covered his mouth.

“Hi.”

Nobody rescued him.

Not Eleanor.

Not Claire.

That mattered.

Lily asked, “Are you my dad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know about me?”

Julian’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Anna looked away.

Lily’s face changed.

“Then why didn’t you come?”

Julian closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he told the truth.

“I was selfish.”

Eleanor began to cry.

Richard put his hand on the table.

Julian continued.

“I was scared of what people would think. I kept telling myself I would fix it later.”

Lily asked, “Was my mom mad?”

“Yes.”

“Was she sad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you say sorry?”

Julian shook his head.

“Not enough.”

Lily looked down.

Then she said, “I’m mad at you.”

Julian nodded.

“You should be.”

Nobody in the room moved.

Lily looked back at the screen.

“But I wanted you to know I’m okay.”

Julian broke.

Not loudly.

He lowered his head and cried into his hands.

Claire watched Eleanor.

The old Eleanor would have rushed forward.

Would have filled the silence.

Would have told everyone he had suffered enough.

This Eleanor stayed seated.

She let her son feel the consequence.

The call lasted eleven minutes.

When it ended, Lily blew out her candles.

Daniel leaned toward Claire.

“You okay?”

Claire nodded.

“I think so.”

Across the table, Eleanor laughed at something Sophie said.

Richard cut cake badly.

Anna corrected him.

For one strange evening, the people connected by betrayal sat together without pretending it had never happened.

It was not a normal family.

Claire no longer believed such a thing existed.

It was simply a group of people trying not to repeat the worst thing they had done.

Maybe that was enough.

Then Lily handed Claire a small envelope.

“I made you something.”

Inside was a drawing.

A house with blue shutters.

Seven stick figures stood outside.

Claire counted.

Then counted again.

“Who’s this?”

Lily pointed.

“That’s you.”

“No, this one.”

A tall figure stood beside Claire.

Lily grinned.

“Daniel.”

May you like

Claire nearly choked on cake.

Across the table, Daniel looked delighted.
