The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Chapter 02 - The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to Find
The envelope had been delivered by a hotel employee who said a young woman had left it at the front desk that afternoon.
No return address.
No explanation.
Just Claire’s name.
Eleanor recovered first.
“Give it to me.”
The security officer hesitated.
Claire reached for it.
“It’s addressed to me.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed. “This concerns my family.”
Claire looked at the champagne soaking into her dress.
“So did what you just did.”
Richard closed his eyes.
A murmur moved through the guests.
Eleanor’s humiliation had lasted less than a minute.
Claire’s had lasted six years.
But the strange thing was, standing there with everyone watching, Claire no longer felt small.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a hotel key card, a handwritten note, and a photograph.
The photograph showed Julian outside a warehouse on the south side of Philadelphia.
Beside him stood Marcus Vale, the Whitmore Group’s chief financial officer.
The man from the video.
Claire turned the photograph over.
One sentence was written on the back.
THE MONEY NEVER LEFT THE FAMILY. LOOK UNDER HARBOR 17.
Richard took the photograph.
His hands began to shake.
Eleanor noticed.
“What is Harbor 17?”
Richard did not answer.
“Richard?”
He looked at Claire instead.
“Where did you get the video?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Julian installed cameras in his home office after someone broke in last year. He forgot I still had access to the security account.”
Eleanor scoffed. “How convenient.”
Claire almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after the video.
“You still think I’m lying.”
“I think my son may have made mistakes,” Eleanor said. “That does not make you innocent.”
Richard turned sharply toward his wife.
“Enough.”
It was the first time Claire had ever heard him speak to Eleanor that way.
The room noticed too.
Eleanor’s face hardened.
Richard held up the photograph.
“Harbor 17 was the internal name of a redevelopment account we closed twelve years ago.”
Claire frowned.
“Closed?”
“It should not exist.”
The hotel key card had a room number written beneath it.
Room 814.
Richard looked toward the elevators.
“Whoever left this wants Claire to find something.”
Eleanor’s voice dropped.
“Or wants us to walk into a trap.”
Claire stared at the key card.
Julian still had not returned to the ballroom.
He had vanished minutes before Eleanor confronted her.
Suddenly Claire remembered his final words before leaving their house that evening.
Don’t embarrass me tonight.
She had thought he meant his mother.
Now she wondered if he had meant something else.
Richard handed the photograph back.
“Claire, you are not going upstairs alone.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“You cannot possibly be taking her side.”
“I’m taking the side of the truth.”
Those words landed harder than the champagne.
Claire, Richard, and two hotel security officers entered the elevator.
At the last second, Eleanor stepped inside too.
Nobody spoke on the ride to the eighth floor.
Room 814 was at the end of the hall.
Claire used the key card.
The light turned green.
Inside, the room was dark.
A lamp clicked on.
Claire froze.
A woman was sitting beside the window.
Her lower lip was split.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Sophie Lane.
Julian’s executive assistant.
The woman Eleanor had fired two weeks earlier for allegedly stealing confidential files.
Sophie looked at Claire.
Then at Eleanor.
“You finally came,” she whispered.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“What have you done?”
Sophie shook her head.
“Nothing.”
May you like
She pointed toward a laptop on the desk.
“But your son has.”
