The Girl Who Knew Claire’s Name

Chapter 06 - The Girl Who Knew Claire’s Name
Claire did not understand how a child she had never met could know her name.
The answer came in a small row house outside Baltimore.
Rachel’s sister, Anna Morgan, opened the door with suspicion written across her face.
She was thirty-eight, exhausted, and protective.
Behind her stood a thin girl with dark blond hair and solemn gray eyes.
Lily.
Seven years old.
Julian’s daughter.
Claire’s husband’s daughter.
The child looked at Claire for several seconds.
Then she asked, “Are you the lady from the pictures?”
Claire glanced at Anna.
“What pictures?”
Anna invited her inside.
The living room was modest.
Clean.
Full of books.
On a shelf sat a small wooden box.
Anna opened it.
Inside were photographs of Claire clipped from magazines, newspaper articles, and Whitmore charity brochures.
Claire stared at them.
“What is this?”
“Rachel kept them.”
“Why?”
Anna sat down.
“Because she felt guilty.”
Claire’s breath caught.
Anna explained.
Rachel had not simply been Julian’s old girlfriend.
She had met him while Claire and Julian were already dating.
Julian told Rachel that Claire was a business arrangement.
He said the engagement was forced.
He promised Rachel he would leave Claire after securing his place in the company.
Then Rachel became pregnant.
Julian panicked.
He paid Dr. Reeves to falsify the paternity record.
He gave Rachel money and ordered her to leave.
For years, Rachel believed Claire had known.
Then she discovered the truth.
Claire had known nothing.
Rachel had followed Claire’s work from a distance.
Her housing projects.
Her community programs.
Her speeches about women rebuilding after financial abuse.
“She wanted to contact you,” Anna said.
“Why didn’t she?”
“She was ashamed.”
Lily had been listening from the hallway.
Claire looked at her.
The little girl stepped forward.
“My mom said you were brave.”
Claire’s eyes burned.
She had not felt brave in days.
She felt betrayed.
Angry.
Confused.
But a dead woman had once looked at Claire’s public life and seen courage.
Claire crouched.
“Your mom was brave too.”
Lily nodded as if she already knew.
Then she handed Claire a folded paper.
“My mom said this was for you.”
Anna looked startled.
“Lily, where did you get that?”
“In her blue book.”
Claire unfolded the page.
Rachel’s handwriting filled both sides.
Claire read the first line.
If you are reading this, Julian finally ran out of places to hide the truth.
Claire sat down.
The letter was not an apology.
It was a warning.
Rachel wrote that Julian had once told her the Whitmore family’s greatest secret was not his affair.
It was not even the stolen money.
It was something called “the Rivergate fire.”
Rachel did not know what it meant.
But Julian had said his father would do anything to keep it buried.
Claire folded the letter.
Anna whispered, “What is Rivergate?”
Claire thought of Richard’s face when Harbor 17 appeared.
“I don’t know.”
Lily tugged gently at Claire’s sleeve.
“Are you mad at me?”
The question broke something open inside her.
Claire turned.
“No.”
“Because my dad married you?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“No, sweetheart.”
Lily looked down.
“Are you going to leave because of me?”
Claire took her hand.
“No.”
For the first time since the gala, Claire knew one thing with complete certainty.
Julian had created this mess.
Lily would not pay for it.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
Richard Whitmore.
She answered.

His voice was shaking.
“Claire, I need to tell you about Rivergate.”
