The Father at the Door

Chapter 08 - The Father at the Door
Claire opened the door before Julian could knock.
He looked exhausted.
For a moment, he seemed almost like the man she had married.
Then he saw Eleanor behind her.
His expression hardened.
“So this is what we’re doing now?”
Claire stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind her.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to see my daughter.”
“You didn’t know where she lived yesterday.”
Julian’s eyes flickered.
Claire understood.
“You followed your mother.”
He did not deny it.
“Lily is my child.”
“She is not your property.”
“I have rights.”
“You also have six years of unpaid responsibility.”
His jaw tightened.
“I sent money.”
“Through secret accounts?”
“I took care of Rachel.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You paid her to disappear.”
“That is not what happened.”
“Then tell me what happened.”
Julian looked toward the window.
His daughter was somewhere behind it.
For the first time, fear entered his face.
“I was twenty-eight.”
Claire stared.
“That’s your defense?”
“I panicked.”
“You married me three days after paying a doctor to bury a paternity report.”
“My mother would have destroyed everything.”
Claire’s voice went quiet.
“No, Julian. You were afraid she would stop thinking you were perfect.”
He looked at her.
The truth landed.
Claire continued.
“So you destroyed Rachel instead.”
Julian’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think you understand me because you found a few files?”
“I understand enough.”
“No, you don’t.”
He leaned closer.
“My father built this family on dead people.”
Claire stepped back.
“You don’t get to use Rivergate as permission.”
“You have no idea what it was like growing up in that house.”
Claire looked at him.
“Neither did Lily.”
He froze.
The door opened.
Eleanor stepped outside.
Julian stared at her.
“Mom.”
She closed the door behind her.
He looked suddenly younger.
“Tell her,” he said. “Tell her what Dad did.”
“I know.”
Julian stopped.
Eleanor continued.
“Your father is going to investigators.”
His face emptied.
“What?”
“He is telling the truth.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“He should have done it years ago.”
“You can’t let him.”
“I can’t stop him.”
“You always stop things.”
The words came out like a child’s accusation.
Eleanor flinched.
Then Julian whispered, “You fix them.”
Claire finally understood the deepest rot in the family.
Julian had not simply grown up rich.
He had grown up rescued.
Every mistake softened.
Every failure renamed.
Every consequence postponed.
Until consequence became something that happened to other people.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“I will not fix this.”
Julian stared at her.
“You’re choosing her?”
Eleanor looked at Claire.
Then toward the house where Lily waited.
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I am finally choosing what is right.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You’ll regret this.”
He turned.
Claire called after him.
“Where is the money?”
Julian stopped beside the sedan.
“What?”
“Eighteen million dollars.”
He looked back.
For a second, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Claire saw it.
“You don’t have it anymore.”
Julian got into the car.
The sedan pulled away.
Eleanor whispered, “What did you see?”
Claire watched the taillights disappear.
“He stole the money.”
May you like
She turned.
“But I don’t think he controls it.”
