The Master Key

Chapter 03 - The Master Key

“You can’t lock me in here!” Isabella screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. “Marcus, I’m your sister! Our parents married when we were kids! How can you believe this crazy woman over me? She’s framing me!”

“Framing you?” Khloe spoke up from the hospital bed, her voice shaking but filled with unyielding strength. “You brought a syringe into my room, Isabella. You told me my baby wasn't going to survive the night.”

“She’s lying!” Isabella shrieked, pointing a manic finger at Khloe. “She’s trying to turn you against me, Marcus! She knows I found out her secret!”

Marcus stepped right up to Isabella, his tall frame towering over her. “What secret, Isabella? Speak.”

Isabella took a deep breath, forcing her posture straight, trying to pull together the remnants of her shattered composure. She looked at Marcus with a wicked, triumphant glint in her tear-filled eyes.

“She’s been cheating on you, Marcus!” Isabella declared loudly, ensuring the nurses and doctor heard every word. “That baby in her stomach isn't yours! I caught her meeting with your former business rival, Ethan Drake, at the Grand Hotel three weeks ago! I came in here today to confront her, and she threw herself off the bed to make it look like I attacked her!”

The room went dead silent. The nurses looked at each other nervously.

Khloe stared at Isabella in absolute disbelief. “Ethan Drake? I’ve never met that man in my life! Marcus, she’s lying!”

Marcus didn't yell. He didn't lose his temper. He simply stared into Isabella’s eyes with a look of profound, icy disgust.

“Ethan Drake died in a plane crash in the Bahamas four weeks ago, Isabella,” Marcus said, his voice dropping like a lead hammer. “So unless my wife has a portal to the afterlife, your story is completely made up.”

Isabella choked on her own breath. Her lips quivered as she realized her lie had instantly collapsed.

“You’re so desperate to destroy my wife,” Marcus continued, stepping closer until he was inches from her face. “You’ve hated Khloe since the day I married her. Because you thought if I stayed single, you’d keep controlling my mother’s estate and my corporate trust funds.”

At that moment, a firm knock sounded on the locked wooden door.

Carlo unlocked the door and pulled it open. Two uniformed city police officers stepped inside, followed by the hospital’s head of security, a retired detective named Captain Miller.

“Mr. Vance,” Captain Miller said, stepping into the room. “Your bodyguard called the precinct reporting an attempted poisoning and physical assault.”

“Officers, thank God!” Isabella yelled, throwing her hands up. “Arrest these people! My stepbrother is holding me hostage in this room!”

Officer Davis, the senior officer, took in the scene calmly. He looked at the bruised cheek on Isabella, the overturned medical cart, the sealed biohazard bag in Dr. Harrison’s hands, and Khloe resting on the exam bed.

“Nobody is holding anyone hostage, ma’am,” Officer Davis said sternly. “Captain Miller, did you review the floor footage?”

Captain Miller pulled a heavy black tablet from under his arm.

“We did more than review the hallway footage, Officer,” Captain Miller announced, looking directly at Isabella. “We accessed the live cloud backup from the high-resolution camera installed in Room 402’s ceiling.”

Isabella’s knees gave out. She had to grab the edge of the stainless-steel table to keep from falling onto the floor.

“What does the video show, Captain?” Marcus asked, his fists clenched tight at his sides.

Captain Miller tapped the tablet screen, turning it around so everyone in the room could see the glowing display.

“It shows everything, Mr. Vance,” Captain Miller revealed gravely. “Starting from twenty minutes ago.”
