Poison in the IV

Chapter 02 - Poison in the IV

“GET AWAY FROM HER!” Marcus screamed.

Before Isabella’s fingers could snatch the IV bag, Marcus leapt up from the floor, grabbed her by her upper arms, and shoved her violently backward. Isabella stumbled, crashing into a mobile medical cart, sending metal trays, surgical scissors, and pill bottles clattering loudly across the marble floor.

The door to Room 402 burst open.

Dr. Harrison, the chief obstetrician, along with two senior trauma nurses, rushed into the room.

“What’s going on in here?!” Dr. Harrison demanded, taking in the chaotic scene—Khloe lying on the floor clutching her belly, Marcus standing defensively over her, and Isabella scrambling up from a pile of scattered medical supplies.

“Doctor! Check my wife!” Marcus demanded, his eyes bloodshot. “My stepsister just attacked her! She kicked her onto the floor!”

The two nurses immediately knelt beside Khloe, gently lifting her onto a mobile gurney and rolling her toward the examination bed.

“Get the fetal monitor connected immediately!” Dr. Harrison ordered, placing a stethoscope against Khloe’s stomach. “Mrs. Vance, can you hear me? Are you experiencing sharp abdominal pain or contractions?”

“My stomach feels tight, Doctor,” Khloe whimpered, tears pouring down her cheeks. “And... and my arm burns where the IV is plugged in.”

Dr. Harrison instantly looked up at the IV pole. His eyes narrowed as he noticed a faint, cloudy discoloration swirling near the entry port of the saline bag—a discoloration that didn't belong in a standard saline solution.

“Nurse! Clamp that IV line right now!” Dr. Harrison barked, his voice filled with sudden, intense urgency. “Disconnect the tube from her arm!”

The nurse reacted with lightning speed, snapping the plastic clamp shut and pulling the needle from Khloe’s vein just as the cloudy liquid reached the tip of the catheter.

Isabella’s face turned from pale to completely translucent. She took two steps toward the open door, intending to slip out into the busy hospital corridor while everyone’s attention was focused on Khloe.

“Carlo! Stop her!” Marcus shouted, pointing at the doorway.

Standing in the hallway was Carlo Rossi—Marcus’s head of corporate security and personal bodyguard. Carlo, a broad-shouldered man with a cold, stone-like face, stepped directly into the door frame, blocking Isabella’s exit with his massive frame.

“Step back inside, Miss Isabella,” Carlo commanded, his voice flat and uncompromising.

“Let me go, Carlo!” Isabella shrieked, striking her fists against his chest. “I haven't done anything wrong! You work for my family too!”

“I work for Mr. Vance,” Carlo replied coldly, grabbing both of her wrists in an iron grip and forcing her back into the room.

Dr. Harrison carefully unhooked the suspicious IV bag, placing it inside a sealed biohazard evidence pouch. He turned to face Marcus, his expression deathly serious.

“Mr. Vance,” Dr. Harrison said quietly. “Someone introduced an unidentified chemical compound into your wife’s intravenous bag. If this had entered her bloodstream, it would have induced violent uterine contractions within three minutes.”

Marcus looked at the sealed plastic bag, then slowly turned his head to stare at Isabella. The air in the room grew dangerously cold.

“Carlo,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, lethal rage. “Lock the door. Nobody leaves this room until the police arrive.”
