The Sound They Thought They Had Lost

Chapter 19 - The Sound They Thought They Had Lost

Claire stared at the monitor.

Fear arrived before joy.

The pregnancy was early. The crash had left scar tissue, and the doctor warned that she would require careful monitoring.

Nothing was guaranteed.

For years, Claire had imagined telling Ethan about a pregnancy with laughter, flowers and a perfect plan.

Instead, she sat inside her car for twenty minutes, holding a grainy ultrasound photograph with shaking hands.

She called him.

“I need you to meet me at the clinic.”

Ethan arrived carrying a toolbox, assuming something had broken.

Claire handed him the photograph.

He looked at it once.

Then again.

His mouth opened, but no sound came.

“Say something,” she whispered.

“Are you okay?”

It was the right first question.

Claire began to cry.

“I’m scared.”

Ethan knelt beside her chair.

“So am I.”

He did not promise that everything would be fine.

He did not turn the moment into a speech about fate.

He rested his forehead against her hand.

“We’ll take one day at a time.”

Vivian learned the news several weeks later.

She did not buy a nursery.

She did not announce it to anyone.

She asked Claire what support would feel helpful and what would feel intrusive.

Claire almost laughed at the careful question.

“Dinner on Thursdays,” she said. “Nothing expensive.”

Vivian arrived the next Thursday with badly cooked chicken and store-bought pie.

Rosa ate two slices while criticizing the chicken.

Marcus returned for the clinic’s opening preparations. He had accepted a position helping residents investigate housing complaints across the city.

Ryan completed treatment and began repaying the money he had stolen. Some family members refused to forgive him.

He accepted that forgiveness was not another debt he could demand someone cancel.

Lauren eventually pleaded guilty to fraud, unlawful access to medical records and conspiracy connected to the sabotage of Claire’s car.

At sentencing, she looked toward her family.

No one celebrated her punishment.

But no one lied to protect her.

Outside the courthouse, a reporter asked Claire whether she had destroyed the Bennett family.

Claire looked at Ethan, Vivian and Ryan.

“No,” she answered. “The lies did that.”

She placed a hand over the life growing inside her.

“The truth gave us a chance to build something else.”
