Justice Was Not a Check

Chapter 17 - Justice Was Not a Check

The settlement was large enough to tempt almost anyone.

Each Jefferson Towers family would receive compensation, temporary housing and a confidentiality agreement.

The company would admit no wrongdoing.

The board expected gratitude.

Rosa pushed the papers back across the table.

“You want to pay us so the next building can stay broken.”

The attorney assured her that new management would improve conditions.

Claire asked whether residents would have a place on the oversight board.

No.

She asked whether all Bennett properties would receive independent inspections.

The attorney called that unreasonable.

She asked whether the stolen foundation funds would be returned.

He said those details were confidential.

Ethan stood.

“Then there is no agreement.”

The attorney reminded him that he no longer represented Bennett Properties.

“I represent my share of the damage.”

Ethan had already surrendered most of his stock, but he still owned a personal investment portfolio and the lake house inherited from his father.

He sold both.

The money funded temporary housing and emergency repairs without requiring anyone to remain silent.

Vivian followed by surrendering control of the family trust.

She asked that the assets be transferred into a resident-led housing fund.

The board fought them.

Donors withdrew support.

Employees threatened to resign.

Within three weeks, the old leadership collapsed.

A new nonprofit organization assumed control of the affordable-housing properties. Half its board seats belonged to residents and maintenance employees.

Rosa accepted one of them.

“You understand this won’t make people trust you,” Claire told Vivian.

“I know.”

“You may still face charges.”

“I know.”

“Why are you doing it?”

Vivian looked through the window at workers repairing the building’s electrical system.

“Because apologies without surrendering power are only performances.”

Lauren remained in custody while prosecutors built their case.

Dr. Hale lost his hospital privileges.

Ryan entered a treatment program and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Marcus declined Vivian’s offer to lead the new organization.

Instead, he recommended Claire.

Claire refused.

“I’m a nurse, not a housing executive.”

Rosa smiled.

“Then build what you understand.”

The neighborhood had no affordable medical clinic.

Claire began imagining one.

May you like

But there was one question she kept avoiding.

Whether Ethan would be part of the life she built next.
