The Dead Accountant’s Last Warning

Chapter 10 - The Dead Accountant’s Last Warning
The message was only eleven seconds long.
Marcus played it twice.
“Do not trust the records. Follow the people who were forced to approve them.”
There were no names.
No account numbers.
No dramatic confession capable of ending the investigation.
Claire understood what he meant.
Lauren had built her power by making frightened people participate. Ryan had shared access codes. Vivian had hidden the original fraud. Employees had approved false repairs because they needed their jobs.
The crime was larger than one villain.
It survived because everyone believed silence was safer.
Claire asked Marcus to locate every property manager, contractor and foundation employee connected to the housing program.
Ethan wanted to focus on clearing their names.
Claire disagreed.
“If we prove you’re innocent but those families still live without heat, what have we accomplished?”
“My freedom matters.”
“So does theirs.”
“I didn’t say it didn’t.”
“You didn’t have to. The company taught all of you to think of people as consequences instead of human beings.”
Ethan walked out.
Claire watched him leave, wondering whether their marriage had survived the crash only to die in Rosa’s kitchen.
Vivian remained behind.
“You were right,” she said.
Claire looked at her.
“About what?”
“I never protected my children. I protected the version of them that made me feel less guilty.”
It was the first apology Vivian had offered without defending herself.
Claire did not forgive her.
But she listened.
That afternoon, Ethan returned to his empty house. The police tape had been removed, but the rooms felt violated.
His wedding photograph lay facedown beside the fireplace.
He lifted it carefully.
Behind the frame, someone had taped a small digital memory card.
Ethan called Claire.
She did not answer.
He inserted the card into an old computer.
The screen showed security footage from the Bennett Foundation garage.
Lauren entered at 1:11 a.m.
Ryan followed six minutes later.
Then a third person appeared.
Ethan leaned toward the screen.
The man wore a maintenance uniform and carried a tool bag.

When he turned toward the camera, Ethan recognized him.
It was Claire’s hospital surgeon.
