What Ethan Chose to Lose

Chapter 12 - What Ethan Chose to Lose
Dr. Hale named the mechanic.
The man worked for a contractor connected to Lauren’s private trust. By the time officers reached his apartment, he had disappeared.
Hale admitted falsifying Claire’s medical report and accessing her chart.
He claimed he never believed Lauren intended to kill her.
Claire had heard that excuse before.
I didn’t know.
I didn’t think.
I only did what I was told.
The district attorney warned that proving Lauren ordered the sabotage would take time.
Meanwhile, the Bennett board offered Ethan a deal.
He could return as chief executive if he publicly separated himself from Claire’s accusations and blamed the scandal on unauthorized employees.
The offer arrived one hour before a televised press conference.
Ethan stood behind the curtain while a public-relations adviser handed him prepared remarks.
Claire was not there.
She had told him that his decision had to be his own.
Lauren sat in the front row, confident that Ethan would protect the company.
Vivian sat near the back.
When Ethan reached the podium, camera flashes filled the room.
He unfolded the prepared statement.
“My family’s company has served this city for more than seventy years,” he began.
Lauren smiled.
Ethan looked down at the words asking him to describe Claire as emotionally distressed.
He thought about Rosa’s apartment.
The coats worn indoors.
The complaints marked resolved.
The wife who had almost died while he sat in meetings discussing reputation.
He tore the speech in half.
“My name appears on contracts I did not approve,” he said. “But ignorance does not erase responsibility.”
Lauren stopped smiling.
“I benefited from a system that made it easy not to ask where the money went. Families suffered while I accepted reports telling me everything was fine.”
A board member stood and walked out.
Ethan continued.
“My wife told the truth before I was brave enough to hear it.”
He announced his resignation.
He surrendered his shares to an independent restitution fund and asked prosecutors to investigate every Bennett property.
The company’s stock fell before he finished speaking.
Outside, Lauren confronted him.
“You destroyed us for a woman who may leave you anyway.”
Ethan looked at his sister.
“She didn’t destroy this family. She showed me what was already broken.”
His phone rang.
It was Rosa.

Smoke was filling the third floor of Jefferson Towers.
And Claire was still inside the building.
