When Lauren Lost the Room

Chapter 16 - When Lauren Lost the Room

Lauren had spent her life believing silence meant obedience.

She did not understand that the room had changed until people began speaking.

A hospital clerk admitted Lauren had demanded access to Claire’s chart.

A contractor confessed to submitting false invoices.

Two foundation employees described being threatened after questioning repair payments.

Ryan walked onto the stage without waiting to be invited.

“I gave Lauren the access codes she used,” he said. “I did it because she knew I had stolen money.”

Lauren stared at him.

“You’re blaming me for your addiction?”

“No. I’m accepting what I did.”

Ryan faced the residents.

“My fear of losing my comfortable life put your lives at risk. I am sorry.”

It was not enough to repair the buildings.

But it was the first honest sentence Ryan had spoken in years.

Lauren turned toward Ethan.

“You’ll let them destroy our father’s legacy?”

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

“Our father’s legacy is exactly what we’re destroying.”

She slapped the microphone from its stand.

The sharp sound echoed through the ballroom.

“You are all hypocrites!” she shouted. “Every one of you took the money. Every one of you enjoyed the name.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“That is true.”

Lauren stopped.

Vivian continued.

“The difference is that some of us have finally decided the name is not worth another person’s suffering.”

Lauren searched the ballroom for one loyal face.

She found none.

Her attorney touched her arm and whispered that detectives were waiting outside.

Lauren’s anger became panic.

She tried to leave through the service corridor, but officers met her at the door.

This time, they had a warrant.

As Lauren was escorted through the ballroom, she looked at Claire.

“You think this family will thank you?”

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t do it for your family.”

After Lauren was gone, the guests remained silent.

Then Rosa walked onto the stage.

“Standing together tonight was easy,” she said. “Tomorrow, we will find out whether any of you mean it.”

She was right.

The arrest made headlines.

But the following morning, the board offered the residents money in exchange for silence.
