The Safe Room

Chapter 09 - The Safe Room

The iron door of the wine cellar stood wide open. Wine bottles lay smashed across the stone floor, their dark liquid mixing with water leaking from the storm outside.

Dante’s heart hammered violently against his ribs as he ran into the back vault room where the hidden steel safe door was located.

“Elena!” Dante called out, his voice raw and filled with desperate panic. “Elena! Leo! Matteo!”

For three agonizing seconds, there was only silence.

Then, a faint mechanical click echoed from behind the heavy steel reinforced wall. The massive, six-inch-thick steel safe door slowly swung outward.

Elena stepped out into the light. She was holding a heavy iron bar in her right hand, her green dress torn at the knee, her hair disheveled, but her eyes bright, sharp, and fierce.

Behind her, tucked safely inside the padded, secure bunker, were Leo and Matteo—completely unharmed, sitting together on a soft cot, holding their wooden toy horse.

When Dante saw his children alive and safe, the terrifying Black Wolf, the feared mob boss of New York, fell to his knees on the cold cellar floor.

Leo and Matteo scrambled out of the safe room, running across the concrete, throwing their small arms tightly around their father’s neck.

“Daddy! You came back!” Leo cried, burying his face in Dante’s wet collar.

“I told you he would come back,” Matteo whispered softly, holding his father’s cheek. “Miss Elena said you were fighting the monsters.”

Dante pulled both of his sons tightly against his chest, burying his face in their hair, tears finally spilling from his eyes for the first time in two painful years. He held them like a man who had just been rescued from the depths of hell.

Over the boys’ shoulders, Dante looked up at Elena.

She stood near the open safe door, her hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline finally left her body. She offered him a small, tired, but infinitely warm smile.

Dante stood up, still holding both boys in his arms, and walked over to her. Without saying a word, he pulled Elena into his embrace, wrapping his powerful arms around her and his sons together.

Elena froze in surprise for a second, then relaxed completely, resting her head against his shoulder, letting out a deep, long breath of pure relief.

“Thank you,” Dante whispered into her hair, his voice choked with deep, profound gratitude. “Thank you for saving my family.”

“We’re a team, Dante,” Elena whispered back gently, wrapping her arms around him. “Always.”
