Chapter 01 - Title: The Guarded Heart of New York

Chapter 01 - The Guardian at the Door

Dante Moretti sat with his back pressed against the cold mahogany wall outside the ruined doorway, his long legs stretched across the carpeted corridor. In his right hand, he held his heavy black automatic pistol, resting it silently on his knee.

Downstairs, his syndicate was in absolute chaos. Footsteps echoed from the ground floor as armed soldiers checked perimeter fences, re-connected disconnected security lines, and revived the two unconscious guards who had been knocked out cold near the back entrance.

Carlo DeSantis walked quietly up the east corridor, stopping two paces away from Dante.

“Boss,” Carlo whispered, his voice low and tense. “The perimeter is secure. Whoever knocked out Frankie and Sal didn't break in from the outside. They used a master key card from inside the house.”

Dante didn't move his eyes from the cracked doorway. “Check the internal server logs. Find out whose keycard was accessed at 2:00 AM.”

“We already did,” Carlo replied, his throat tightening. “It was registered to Isabella’s old security clearance. The card that was supposed to be locked in your private safe.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed into slivers of icy steel. He slowly turned his head to look up at his underboss. For two years, Dante had ruled the New York underworld with an iron fist, earning his terrifying moniker—the Black Wolf—because he felt no mercy, no fear, and no attachment to anything except his twin boys.

“Are you telling me my dead wife’s keycard moved through this house tonight?” Dante asked, his voice dangerously soft.

“Either someone stole it from your safe,” Carlo said, “or our new housekeeper isn't just a housekeeper.”

Dante stood up in one fluid, deadly motion. He re-holstered his gun inside his tailored jacket, reached out, and slowly pushed the broken bedroom door open.

Inside, the morning sun was just beginning to streak through the heavy velvet curtains, casting warm golden light across the king-sized bed.

Elena Torres stirred. Her long, dark lashes fluttered open, and she blinked against the morning light. The moment her brown eyes met Dante’s imposing figure standing in the doorway, she gasped softly, instinctively pulling the two sleeping boys closer to her chest to protect them.

“Mr. Moretti…” Elena stammered, her voice raspy from sleep. She looked around the room, realizing where she was, and the color instantly drained from her face. “I… I’m so sorry. I didn't mean to stay here. The boys…”

“Why are you in this room, Elena?” Dante asked, stepping slowly toward the bed. His massive, tattooed frame cast a long shadow over her.

“Leo was having a night terror at midnight,” Elena whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the twins. “He was screaming for his mother. Matteo ran out of his room to find him, but Leo wouldn't calm down. He kept running down the halls, trying doors. When he reached this lock, he started pounding on it until his knuckles bled.”

Dante’s heart squeezed painfully in his chest.

“I didn't break the door, sir,” Elena continued, looking directly into Dante’s terrifying eyes without flinching. “The door was already slightly unlatched when we got here. Leo pushed it open, ran to this bed, and buried his face in the pillows because… because it still smells like her.”

Dante froze mid-step.

“Matteo was crying so hard he couldn't breathe,” Elena added gently, stroking Matteo’s soft hair. “I couldn't just leave them on the cold floor, Mr. Moretti. I sat on the bed to read them a story, and… I must have fallen asleep.”

Dante looked down at his sons. Matteo was still clutching the wooden toy horse—the horse he hadn't touched since the day a car bomb took his mother’s life.

“You’re lying about one thing, Elena,” Dante said coldly.

Elena swallowed hard. “What?”

“This door was locked from the inside,” Dante stated, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. “And two of my best guards were found unconscious at the foot of the stairs. Care to explain how a quiet housekeeper bypassed twelve armed men?”
