The Storm Breaks

Chapter 06 - The Storm Breaks
By 8:00 PM, a violent thunderstorm rolled over New York City. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the grand windows of the Moretti estate as heavy rain battered the roof.
Inside the master study on the second floor, Dante stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror, putting on a heavy tactical vest over his black shirt. He checked his weapons with practiced, mechanical efficiency—loading magazines, checking sight alignments, and securing knives inside his boots.
A soft knock sounded at the open study door.
Dante turned around. Elena stood in the doorway, holding a small silver tray with a warm cup of espresso. She looked at his tactical gear, her eyes filled with deep, silent concern.
“The boys are asleep,” Elena said softly, setting the tray down on his desk. “Leo insisted on sleeping with his wooden horse under his pillow.”
Dante’s expression softened for a brief second. “Thank you, Elena.”
Elena walked over to him, standing right in front of his imposing frame. “You’re going out there tonight, aren't you?”
“I have to finish this,” Dante said quietly, adjusting the straps on his vest. “Dominic Falcone won't stop until he or I am dead. I cannot leave a threat hanging over my children’s heads for another night.”
Elena looked down at his large, tattooed hands—hands that had just executed a traitor down in the cellar, yet hands that had gently kissed his sons’ heads earlier that afternoon. She reached out, her soft fingers gently resting over his bruised knuckles.
“Come back to them, Dante,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly with raw emotion. “They can’t lose another parent.”
Dante looked down at her. In the dim light of the study, her brown eyes shone with an honesty and warmth that he hadn't felt in his life for two dark, brutal years. Her presence was like a beacon of light cutting through the suffocating darkness of his world.
Dante lifted his hand, his thumb gently brushing across her cheek, tucking a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear.
“If anything goes wrong tonight,” Dante said softly, his voice heavy with weight, “my lawyer has instructions to transfer full legal guardianship of my sons and the estate trust to you.”
Elena gasped, her eyes widening in pure shock. “What?! Dante, no! I’m just a housekeeper!”
“You’re the only person in two years who made my sons feel safe,” Dante declared firmly, looking straight into her soul. “You shielded them with your life last night. You are more family to them than blood ever was.”
Before Elena could respond, the thunder outside cracked deafeningly overhead, followed instantly by the violent sound of automatic gunfire shattering the glass windows on the ground floor!
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
The house lights instantly went dark! The emergency red backup lights flickered to life, bathing the hallway in a eerie, blood-red glow.
Sirens began screaming throughout the mansion’s intercom system!
“BREACH! PERIMETER BREACH AT THE FRONT GATES!” Carlo’s panicked voice roared through Dante’s shoulder radio. “HEAVY FORCES! DOMINIC FALCONE IS HERE HIMSELF WITH THIRTY ARMED MEN!”

Dante reacted instantly. He grabbed Elena by her waist, pulling her behind his heavy mahogany desk as a hail of bullets shattered the study’s glass balcony doors, ripping through the books and plaster walls above them!
“The safe room!” Dante roared over the deafening gunfire, pulling his assault rifle from behind the desk and handing her the golden keycard. “GET THE BOYS TO THE WINE CELLAR NOW!”
