The Story He Was Preparing to Tell

Chapter 05 - The Story He Was Preparing to Tell
By noon, Claire knew.
Grant had spent months building a story about her.
Not publicly.
Not yet.
Quietly.
Carefully.
He had told friends Claire was forgetful.
He had mentioned to board members that she was “emotionally unstable.”
He had suggested to their accountant that she no longer understood complicated financial matters.
Even Sophie, their twenty-year-old daughter, had heard pieces of it.
“Dad said you were overwhelmed,” Sophie whispered when Claire confronted her.
They sat in Claire’s kitchen, untouched tea between them.
“What else?”
Sophie looked miserable.
“He said Grandma’s death changed you.”
Claire’s mother had died eighteen months earlier.
Grant had used her grief as evidence.
“He told me you were making strange decisions.”
“What strange decisions?”
“He never said.”
Of course he hadn’t.
He only needed the suggestion.
Claire reached across the table.
“Sophie, I need you to understand something. Your father and I are going to separate.”
Her daughter began crying immediately.
Claire moved beside her.
“This is not your fault.”
“Did Dad cheat?”
Claire could not lie.
“Yes.”
Sophie covered her face.
“With Vanessa?”
Claire froze.
Sophie lowered her hands.
“I saw them once.”
“When?”
“Christmas.”
Claire remembered Christmas.
Grant had arrived late.
Vanessa had sent flowers.
Sophie had said nothing.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Dad saw me.”
Claire’s blood ran cold.
“He told me it was over. He said telling you would destroy the family.”
Claire closed her eyes.
There it was again.
Protect the family.
Protect the name.
Protect everyone except Claire.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man introduced himself as a reporter from the New York Ledger.
“Mrs. Bennett, I’m calling for comment regarding concerns about your mental fitness and your attempt to disrupt the sale of Harbor House.”
Claire stared across the kitchen.
Grant’s story had already begun.
The reporter continued.
“We’ve been told your family may seek temporary conservatorship over your financial affairs.”
Sophie heard the word.
Her face went white.
Claire stood slowly.
“Who told you that?”
The reporter paused.
“I’m not authorized to identify my source.”
Claire looked at her daughter.
Then she remembered the gala.
The smile on Grant’s face before he poured the champagne.
It had never been only anger.
He had wanted witnesses.
A room full of people who might later say Claire had caused a scene.
The humiliation had been bait.
May you like
And somehow, by refusing to break, she had ruined his first move.
Now Grant was preparing the second.
