One Year Later

Chapter 18 - One Year Later
On the anniversary of the gala, Claire stood in the same ballroom.
The chandeliers were unchanged.
She was not.
There was no midnight-blue gown.
No champagne.
No Grant beside her.
Claire wore a simple black dress and held a microphone.
Richard sat at the front table.
Sophie sat beside him.
Marcus Hill had returned after the board completed its review. He was no longer acting CEO.
He was the permanent one.
Claire had kept her promise.
One year.
Then she stepped away.
Under the restructuring plan, employees now owned thirty percent of Harbor House.
Community investors owned another portion.
The Bennett family name remained on the building, but the Bennett family no longer controlled everyone inside it.
Claire preferred it that way.
She looked across the ballroom.
“I thought last year was the worst night of my life.”
Soft laughter moved through the crowd.
“I was wrong.”
The room became quiet.
“It was the night I stopped confusing humiliation with defeat.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
Claire continued.
“Sometimes the thing that breaks in public has been broken in private for years.”
Sophie began to cry.
“But breaking is not always the end.”
Claire smiled.
“Sometimes it is simply the first honest sound.”
The applause began before she finished.
This time, Richard was not the only one standing.
After the gala, Claire walked alone onto the Harbor House terrace.
A man was waiting there.
Daniel Reed.
The architect overseeing the hotel restoration.
Fifty.
Divorced.
Quiet.
He had asked Claire to dinner three times.
She had declined three times.
Daniel held out a paper cup.
“Coffee?”
Claire accepted it.
“That depends.”
“On?”
“Is there champagne in it?”
Daniel laughed.
Claire did too.
Then he asked again.
“Dinner Friday?”
Claire looked toward the ballroom.
For most of her life, she had believed saying yes was an obligation.

She was finally learning it could also be a choice.
“Friday,” she said.
