What Sophie Finally Said

Chapter 12 - What Sophie Finally Said

Grant was sitting on Sophie’s couch when Claire arrived.

He looked smaller.

No tailored suit.

No photographers.

No boardroom.

Just a father whose daughter would not sit beside him.

“I wanted to explain,” he said.

Claire stayed near the door.

“Then explain to her.”

Grant looked at Sophie.

“I never meant to hurt you.”

Sophie’s face hardened.

“You put money in my name.”

“I was protecting assets.”

“You put stolen money in my name.”

Grant flinched.

“It wasn’t stolen.”

“Then why did you hide it?”

Silence.

Sophie began crying.

Claire wanted to cross the room and hold her.

She didn’t.

This was Sophie’s moment.

Not hers.

“I spent my whole life trying to make you proud,” Sophie said. “And you used that.”

Grant stood.

“That’s not fair.”

Sophie laughed through her tears.

“Not fair?”

She walked to the door and opened it.

“You told me not to tell Mom about Vanessa because I would destroy our family.”

Grant looked at Claire.

Sophie continued.

“But you were already destroying it.”

“Sophie—”

“No.”

It was the first time Claire had ever heard her daughter speak to her father with complete certainty.

“I love you.”

Grant’s face softened.

“But I don’t trust you.”

The softness disappeared.

“And until you stop blaming Mom, Grandpa, Vanessa, the board, and everyone else for what you did…”

Sophie pointed toward the hallway.

“…I don’t want you here.”

Grant stared at his daughter.

Then he walked out.

Claire waited until the elevator doors closed.

Only then did Sophie collapse against her.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

“For what?”

“For not telling you.”

Claire held her.

“You were a child trying to hold together something adults were breaking.”

For the first time since the gala, Claire cried.

Not because Grant had cheated.

Not because of the money.

Because her daughter had carried a secret that never should have belonged to her.

That evening, Claire received another call.

The independent auditors had found the missing money.

Most of it was recoverable.

But they had also discovered something else.

Grant had not acted alone.

Someone inside the Bennett company had approved nearly every suspicious transaction.

Someone Claire trusted.

Marcus Hill.

The man she had placed in charge.
