The Man Everyone Trusted

Chapter 13 - The Man Everyone Trusted
Marcus did not deny signing the documents.
He sat across from Claire in the Harbor House office and placed his hands flat on the table.
“I approved them.”
Richard looked furious.
“You helped Grant steal from us?”
“No.”
Marcus turned to Claire.
“Every document I signed came with board authorization codes.”
“Whose codes?”
“Yours.”
Claire went still.
“My codes?”
Marcus nodded.
For two years, the system showed approvals issued under Claire’s dormant director credentials.
Credentials she had never used.
Someone had created a digital version of her authority.
Just as someone had forged her signature.
Grant had built an entire financial structure designed to point back to his wife if it collapsed.
Marcus had suspected something was wrong but had been afraid to challenge Grant.
That was his failure.
Not theft.
Cowardice.
Claire understood that kind of failure better than she wanted to.
“How many times did you know something felt wrong?” she asked.
Marcus looked down.
“Too many.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I have two kids in college.”
Claire nodded.
“There’s always a reason.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Are you firing me?”
“Yes.”
Richard began to speak.
Claire raised a hand.
“For thirty days.”
Marcus blinked.
“You will cooperate with the investigation. You will tell the auditors everything. At the end of thirty days, the board decides whether you return.”
“Why?”
“Because silence has consequences.”
Claire paused.
“But consequences don’t always have to be permanent.”
Marcus stood.
At the door, he stopped.
“There is one thing.”
Claire waited.
“The night before the gala, Grant asked me to prepare termination papers.”
“For whom?”
Marcus looked at her.
“All senior employees over fifty-five.”
Richard stared at him.
“Why?”
“To make the company look leaner before Denton took control.”
Claire felt sick.
Forty-three people.
People who had spent decades building the business.
Grant had been planning to discard them before anyone knew the company was in trouble.
The next morning, Claire called the board together.
This time, when Richard offered her the CEO position, she did not immediately refuse.
May you like
Because the question was no longer whether she wanted Grant’s chair.
It was whether she could turn it into something entirely different.
