The Woman in the Red Coat

Chapter 04 - The Woman in the Red Coat
Vanessa Cole did not look surprised when Claire entered the corporate lobby.
That bothered Claire more than guilt would have.
Vanessa was standing beside the elevators in a red wool coat, holding a leather travel bag.
Leaving.
“Going somewhere?” Claire asked.
Vanessa pressed the elevator button.
“Chicago.”
“For business?”
Vanessa gave a small, tired smile.
“I don’t think I work here anymore.”
Claire studied her.
Vanessa had joined Bennett Harbor six years earlier. Intelligent. Ambitious. Flawlessly composed.
Grant praised her constantly.
Claire had once invited her to Thanksgiving dinner.
Now she wondered how many times Vanessa had sat at Claire’s table while hiding the truth.
“Were you sleeping with my husband?”
The elevator doors opened.
Vanessa did not step inside.
“Yes.”
No excuses.
No tears.
Just one word.
Claire had imagined this moment many times without admitting it.
She had imagined screaming.
Slapping someone.
Breaking something expensive.
Instead, she felt strangely calm.
“How long?”
“Eleven months.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Did you help him move company money?”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“No.”
“Did you know?”
“Not at first.”
“But eventually?”
Vanessa looked toward the security desk.
“Claire, you should go home.”
“I’m done taking instructions from people who lie to me.”
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
Then she reached into her bag and removed an envelope.
“Grant asked me to destroy this yesterday.”
Claire did not take it.
“What is it?”
“A copy of an agreement.”
“With whom?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Denton Capital.”
Claire knew the name.
A private investment firm famous for acquiring distressed family businesses, cutting staff, and selling the pieces.
“They weren’t buying Harbor House,” Vanessa said.
“They were buying the debt.”
Claire finally understood.
The secret loans.
The missing money.
The rushed sale.
Grant had not simply endangered one hotel.
He had put the entire company within reach of people waiting for it to fail.
“Why are you giving me this?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled, but she did not cry.
“Because I thought Grant was leaving you.”
Claire almost smiled at the cruelty of the sentence.
Vanessa continued.
“Last night, after the gala, I heard him on the phone.”
“With Denton?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“With a lawyer.”
Claire waited.
“He said once you were declared financially incompetent, he could control the trust.”
The elevator doors opened again.
This time Vanessa stepped inside.
Before they closed, she said one last thing.
“Claire, the champagne wasn’t the plan.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
May you like
“What was?”
The doors slid shut.
