The Date That Changed Everything

Chapter 03 - The Date That Changed Everything
The motel room was worse than Adrian expected.
One bed.
A leaking sink.
Two suitcases.
A stack of overdue bills.
And on the nightstand, a photograph.
Adrian picked it up.
Rachel.
She was older, her blond hair shorter, faint lines around her eyes.
But it was her.
Beside her stood Eli.
Adrian studied the boy's face again.
Marcus noticed.
"Don't jump to conclusions."
"I'm not."
"You are."
Adrian placed the photograph down.
They searched carefully.
Inside a drawer, Marcus found a folder.
Medical receipts.
Employment applications.
Eviction notices.
Then a birth certificate.
Eli Bennett.
Date of birth: April 14.
Adrian did the calculation instantly.
His relationship with Rachel had ended eleven years earlier.
Eli was ten.
Adrian stared at the paper.
The timing was possible.
Marcus read his expression.
"Adrian."
"I know."
"Possible doesn't mean true."
"I know."
But Adrian could barely hear him.
His mind returned to his final night with Rachel.
They had argued.
Adrian had received an offer from his father to join the family business.
Rachel believed Adrian's father would control him forever.
Adrian accused her of not believing in him.
She left crying.
Three days later, she was gone.
No phone call.
No forwarding address.
Nothing.
Adrian had spent years convincing himself that Rachel had chosen another life.
Now he wondered whether the truth had been stolen from both of them.
Eli entered the room holding the teddy bear.
"Did you find something?"
Adrian quickly folded the certificate.
"No."
Eli looked disappointed.
Then he pointed toward the closet.
"Mom kept important things up there."
Marcus reached onto the highest shelf.
He pulled down a battered metal box.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope.
Adrian recognized the handwriting immediately.
His own.
He opened it.
It was a letter he had written to Rachel eleven years ago.
A letter he remembered mailing.
Rachel, please call me. Whatever happened between us, we can fix it.
Adrian looked deeper into the box.
There were twelve more letters.
Every letter he had ever sent her.
All unopened.
Yet Rachel had once told a mutual friend that Adrian never contacted her.
Someone had intercepted them.
At the bottom of the box was one final document.
A check.
One million dollars.
Issued eleven years ago.
The signature belonged to Adrian's father.
And written across the memo line were four words:
Settlement — Rachel Bennett. Confidential.
Adrian's hands began to shake.

His father had not simply known about Rachel.
He had paid her to disappear.
