The Teddy Bear Foundation

Chapter 19 - The Teddy Bear Foundation
Two years later, Adrian and Rachel opened the Bennett-Cole Family Center.
Its purpose was simple.
Help families in temporary housing.
Provide legal support.
Emergency childcare.
Job assistance.
And safe places for children whose parents were in crisis.
Eli chose the logo.
A teddy bear.
At the opening ceremony, reporters asked why.
Eli took the microphone.
"Because sometimes a kid only has one thing left."
He held up the old bear.
"And sometimes that one thing can lead you home."
Rachel cried.
Adrian did too.
He no longer cared who saw.
The restored pension fund reached ninety-seven percent of its original value.
Cole Industries survived, smaller but cleaner.
Adrian remained chairman but appointed an independent CEO.
For the first time, no Cole family member had absolute control.
Charles eventually completed his sentence.
He did not return to business.
Instead, he volunteered quietly with financial-crime education programs.
His relationship with Adrian remained complicated.
But once a month, he visited the yellow house.
He and Eli played chess.
He always lost.
Adrian suspected intentionally.
One summer evening, the entire family sat in the backyard.
Rachel's tomato plants had taken over half the garden.
Adrian pointed at them.
"This was your dream."
Rachel looked around.
"No."
"What?"
"This is better."
"Why?"
She smiled.
"Because in my dream, I didn't know what it would cost to get here."
Adrian took her hand.
"And was it worth it?"
Rachel looked toward Eli laughing with his grandfather.
Then back at Adrian.
"Ask me again in fifty years."
May you like
He smiled.
"Deal."
