The Man Who Chose to Lose

Chapter 13 - The Man Who Chose to Lose
Adrian called an emergency company meeting.
Employees filled the auditorium.
Thousands more watched online.
Adrian stepped onto the stage without notes.
"My family failed you."
Silence.
"My father concealed financial crimes committed by senior executives."
Whispers spread.
"Some people will tell you the company must protect itself."
Adrian paused.
"I disagree."
Behind him, a screen displayed a number.
$682 million.
"Effective today, every nonessential Cole family asset will be liquidated."
The room erupted.
Adrian continued.
"My private properties. Family investment accounts. Corporate aircraft. Executive bonuses."
Rachel watched from the back.
"So much of that money as legally possible will go toward restoring the stolen pension funds."
A reporter shouted.
"Mr. Cole, this could destroy your personal fortune."
Adrian looked toward him.
"Then I'll learn how to live with less."
For the first time, applause began.
Quietly.
Then louder.
Adrian was not forgiven overnight.
He did not expect to be.
Investigations continued.
Lawsuits followed.
The company lost contracts.
But something else happened.
Employees stayed.
Many believed Adrian was doing what his father had refused to do.
Facing the truth.
Months passed.
The stolen pension fund was gradually restored.
Victor Hale faced federal charges.
Charles pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction.
His sentence was reduced because of his cooperation.
Adrian visited him once.
The meeting lasted twenty minutes.
Neither knew how to repair eleven years of betrayal.
But before Adrian left, Charles asked:
"Does Eli still have that teddy bear?"
Adrian smiled faintly.
"Rachel repaired it."
Charles nodded.
"He looks like you."
Adrian stopped.
"No."
He thought of Eli's courage.
"He looks like Rachel."
Outside prison, Rachel waited beside the car.
"How was he?"
"Old."
She understood.
On the drive home, neither spoke for several minutes.
Then Rachel said, "Eli wants you at his school Friday."
"Why?"
"Father-and-son breakfast."

Adrian looked out the window.
After everything he had lost, the invitation felt like the greatest thing he had ever been given.
