The Guest No One Expected

Chapter 18 - The Guest No One Expected
The wedding took place in the backyard.
No luxury hotel.
No celebrity guests.
No magazine photographers.
Just friends.
Employees who had stood by Adrian.
Teachers from Rachel's school.
Families affected by the pension scandal.
And one empty chair.
Eli noticed it.
"Who's that for?"
Adrian looked toward the gate.
"Someone who probably won't come."
Then a car stopped outside.
Charles stepped out.
He had been granted temporary release under supervision for the family event.
He looked thinner.
Older.
He stood uncertainly at the gate.
Adrian had invited him.
But invitation was not forgiveness.
Charles approached slowly.
"Thank you."
Adrian nodded.
"For Eli."
"I understand."
Eli walked toward his grandfather.
For several seconds, Charles said nothing.
Then he crouched.
"I'm sorry I missed so much."
Eli studied him.
"My mom says sorry only matters if you change."
Charles looked toward Rachel.
"Your mother is right."
Eli nodded.
"Okay."
It was not forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
During the ceremony, Rachel wore no expensive designer gown.
Adrian had no private orchestra.
Yet when she walked toward him beneath strings of backyard lights, Adrian felt richer than he ever had.
Eli stood beside him as best man.
Rachel reached the altar.
"You remembered the speech this time?"
Adrian whispered.
"No."
She laughed.
"Perfect."
They exchanged vows they had written themselves.
No promises of perfect happiness.
Only honesty.
Patience.
And choosing each other even when choosing was difficult.
When the ceremony ended, Adrian looked toward the people gathered around them.
For years, he had believed family was something inherited.
Now he understood.
May you like
Family could also be rebuilt.
One difficult choice at a time.
