A Father’s Worst Mistake

Chapter 09 - A Father’s Worst Mistake

Daniel’s anger with Claire lasted less than a minute.

Then he heard the fear in her voice.

Nolan Price had threatened to expose confidential information about her son, a college freshman who had received tuition assistance from a school vendor. Claire insisted the aid was legitimate, but Nolan promised to make it look like a bribe.

“I panicked,” she said. “I signed what they put in front of me.”

“Where are you now?”

“In my office.”

“Leave the building.”

“I cannot. The security system logs every exit, and Evelyn has someone waiting outside.”

Daniel called the investigators. By the time officers arrived, Claire’s office was empty.

Her phone lay on the desk beside the false statement.

For twelve hours, no one knew where she was.

Emma watched Daniel move from one call to another, his voice calm, his hands unsteady. She had never seen him look afraid before.

“You should have taken me out of that school when Mom died,” she said.

The words stopped him.

After Nora’s death, Emma had begged to remain at Westbridge because it was familiar. Daniel agreed because he believed stability would help her heal. Later, when small problems appeared—dismissive emails, unexplained fees, cold treatment from administrators—he ignored them. He told himself he was protecting Emma from more change.

In truth, he had been protecting himself from admitting he could not manage everything alone.

“You are right,” he said.

Emma looked surprised.

“I wanted the school to remain the place your mother trusted. I kept believing it was, even after the evidence changed.”

“Does that mean I have to leave?”

“It means you will not go back until you feel safe.”

At dawn, police found Claire at her sister’s house two counties away. She had fled after receiving photographs of Emma leaving Daniel’s home. The message attached to the photographs said that children suffered when adults failed to cooperate.

Claire agreed to testify.

Her testimony confirmed the retaliation plan, the false invoices, and Nolan’s control over the board. She also revealed one more fact.

The two girls who filmed Emma had not started recording by accident.

A school communications aide had told students that “something important” would happen in the cafeteria and encouraged them to capture it.

The humiliation had been designed for the internet.

The plan was to make Daniel look like a wealthy father demanding special treatment.

Instead, the video had shown the truth.

But a second edited clip was about to be released, and this one made Daniel appear to threaten Mr. Mercer.
