The Price of Staying Silent

Chapter 07 - The Price of Staying Silent

At 4:45 p.m., Daniel walked into Westbridge with the legal notice folded inside his jacket.

He did not bring the flash drive.

Principal Harrow waited in the conference room with Evelyn Cross and Nolan Price. Nolan was a polished man in his late fifties whose smile seemed designed for campaign photographs. A silver school pin gleamed on his lapel.

“Daniel,” he said, as though welcoming an old friend. “This situation has become unnecessarily ugly.”

“My daughter was used to stop an audit.”

Nolan rested both hands on the table. “Your daughter experienced an unfortunate misunderstanding caused by an employee who has been suspended.”

Evelyn slid a document toward Daniel. It offered Emma continued enrollment, a written apology, and a substantial donation to the Nora Reed Community Fund.

In exchange, Daniel would agree that the cafeteria incident resulted from individual misconduct. He would destroy all internal documents and refrain from public statements.

Daniel read the amount.

One hundred thousand dollars.

“You are offering to return part of the money you took,” he said.

Evelyn’s face hardened. “That accusation is defamatory.”

Nolan leaned back. “You are an intelligent man. You know what a prolonged fight will do to Emma. Every search result for the rest of her life could show her crying over a lunch tray.”

The threat was delivered softly.

Daniel folded the agreement in half.

Then again.

He placed it in the center of the table.

“You chose the wrong father to frighten.”

Nolan’s smile faded. “Everyone has something to lose.”

“So do you.”

Daniel stood to leave.

Principal Harrow followed him into the hallway. Her heels clicked quickly behind him.

“Wait.”

He turned.

For the first time, she looked less like a principal and more like a woman who had not slept.

“I did not know they would do it in front of the entire cafeteria,” she said.

“You approved the restriction.”

“I approved a temporary account hold.”

“You told Mercer to take the tray.”

Her eyes filled with panic. “Because Evelyn said the fund was about to collapse. She said hundreds of children would lose meals if you pulled support.”

“They were stealing from it.”

Claire looked toward the closed conference-room door.

Then she whispered, “There is a second set of books.”

Before Daniel could ask where, Nolan opened the door behind her.

“Claire,” he said pleasantly, “is there a problem?”

She stepped away from Daniel.

“No,” she replied. “Nothing at all.”

But as she passed him, she pressed a small brass key into his hand.
