The Video They Cut Apart

Chapter 10 - The Video They Cut Apart

The edited clip appeared before breakfast.

It began with Daniel entering the cafeteria and removed every image of Emma crying. It cut directly to his confrontation with Mr. Mercer, slowed his movements, and repeated the sharpest sentence three times.

Who ordered you to do this to my daughter?

A caption described him as an aggressive millionaire intimidating a school employee over “routine lunch policy.”

Within hours, commentators who had defended Emma began accusing Daniel of using his influence to destroy working people. Old courtroom footage was pulled from public archives. Strangers dissected his marriage, Nora’s illness, and Emma’s education.

Westbridge’s board announced an emergency public hearing.

Nolan Price promised “full transparency.”

Daniel’s attorney advised him not to attend.

“He controls the room, the agenda, and most of the board,” she said. “Let the investigators work.”

But parents were already organizing. More than two hundred signed statements describing meal shaming, unexplained restrictions, and retaliatory fees. Several said they had remained silent because they feared losing scholarships.

Mr. Mercer wanted to testify.

Daniel warned him that Nolan’s lawyers would destroy his credibility.

“They should question me,” Mercer said. “I did what they ordered. Emma deserves to hear me admit it where everyone heard me shame her.”

Emma stood in the doorway.

“Do I have to go?” she asked.

“No,” Daniel said immediately.

“Will they talk about me?”

“Yes.”

“Then I want to hear what they say.”

Daniel knelt so they were eye to eye. “You do not owe anyone your bravery.”

“I’m not trying to be brave.” She took a slow breath. “I’m tired of adults telling my story while I’m somewhere else.”

The hearing was held in the school auditorium. Every seat was filled. Reporters lined the back wall. Nolan Price sat at the center of the stage, framed by the Westbridge crest.

He opened by expressing sympathy for Emma.

Then he displayed the edited video.

A murmur spread through the room.

Nolan turned toward Daniel. “Mr. Reed, did you threaten a cafeteria employee in front of children?”

Daniel reached for the microphone.

Before he could answer, one of the two girls who had filmed the original incident stood from the third row.

“My video has the whole thing,” she said.
