The Room Beneath the Kitchen

Chapter 08 - The Room Beneath the Kitchen

The key was stamped B-17.

Westbridge’s building plans showed no room with that number, but Mr. Mercer recognized it immediately.

“It is the old dry-storage basement,” he said. “They stopped using it after a pipe leak.”

The entrance was hidden behind stacked supply carts near the cafeteria kitchen. Mr. Mercer said Evelyn Cross visited it on the last Friday of every month, always after the evening custodians left.

Daniel did not break into the school. He took the key and Claire’s statement to county investigators, along with the emails and vendor records. By sunset, a judge had approved a search warrant.

The basement held six locked file cabinets.

Inside were paper ledgers, duplicate invoices, prepaid debit cards, and folders labeled with the names of charitable funds. Nora’s name appeared on two of them.

The second set of books showed that more than $640,000 had been diverted over four years.

Not all of it went to BrightPath Nutrition.

Some paid for luxury travel described as “educational development.” Some covered private club memberships used for “donor cultivation.” Nearly fifty thousand dollars had financed a renovation to the board lounge while cafeteria equipment remained broken.

The investigators also found lists of students whose accounts had been restricted during fundraising negotiations.

Emma’s name was the most recent.

Daniel stood beneath the fluorescent basement lights and read the handwritten note beside it:

High-profile guardian. Pressure must be visible.

He felt physically ill.

Upstairs, reporters gathered behind police barriers. Word of the search had already leaked.

Nolan Price issued a statement claiming the records were planted. Evelyn Cross took emergency leave. Principal Harrow stopped answering calls.

That night, someone threw a brick through the window of Mr. Mercer’s car. No one was injured, but the message was clear.

Daniel arranged for Mr. Mercer and his wife to stay in a hotel under another name. He also hired security for his home, a decision he tried to hide from Emma.

She noticed the unfamiliar car parked outside.

“Are the bad people coming here?” she asked.

“No one is going to hurt you.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Daniel sat beside her on the stairs.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

It was Principal Harrow.

Her voice was barely audible.

“They know I gave you the key,” she said. “Nolan wants me to sign a statement saying you threatened Emma’s enrollment unless I helped you.”

May you like

“Do not sign it.”

“I already did.”
