Sarah Behind Glass

Chapter 07 - Sarah Behind Glass
Sarah Harper looked older than thirty-four.
When she entered the jail visitation room, her blond hair was tangled, and exhaustion had hollowed the skin beneath her eyes.
She stopped when she saw Mack.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
The last time they had stood in the same room was at Daniel’s funeral.
Mack had blamed her for keeping Daniel away from him.
Sarah had blamed Mack for making Daniel believe he had to choose between his father and the woman he loved.
Both had been grieving.
Both had said unforgivable things.
“Where is Eli?” Sarah asked.
“Safe.”
“With Grant?”
“No.”
Her shoulders dropped.
Mack told her about the biker yard, the wooden motorcycle, the bruises, and the emergency protection order.
Sarah pressed both hands against the glass.
“He made it.”
“He found me.”
“I told him to wait until Grant left for work. I told him to take the bus to the garage.”
“He walked the last four miles.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
Mack wanted to accuse her of waiting too long.
Then he saw the fading marks around her wrist.
“What has Grant been doing to you?”
“Controlling everything. My phone. My bank account. Who I spoke to. He told people I was unstable whenever I disagreed with him.”
“Why marry him?”
“Because he was Daniel’s best friend.”
The answer struck harder than Mack expected.
After Daniel died, Grant brought groceries, fixed the leaking roof, and drove Sarah to medical appointments. He became the person everyone trusted.
By the time Sarah understood that his kindness had conditions, Eli was already calling him Dad.
“Grant told me Daniel caused the crash,” she said. “He said Danny was drunk and refused to let him drive.”
“Bear saw Grant behind the wheel.”
Sarah stared at him.
Mack told her about the storage unit and the letters.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You never received them?”
“Not one.”
“I gave the first three to Grant. He promised to deliver them.”
The room went silent.
Grant had not merely lied about the crash.
He had spent years keeping Daniel’s family separated.
Sarah leaned closer to the glass.
“He wants the land Daniel left Eli.”
“What land?”
“The fourteen acres behind our house. A distribution company offered more than two million dollars for it.”
“Eli owns it?”
“Through Daniel’s trust. Grant needs me declared incompetent and himself appointed as Eli’s permanent guardian.”
Mack finally understood.
Grant was not simply trying to hide the past.
He was trying to steal Eli’s future.

Sarah’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“And tomorrow morning, a judge is supposed to approve the sale.”
