The Night the Club Stood Guard

Chapter 13 - The Night the Club Stood Guard

The police considered the photograph a threat.

For the first time, Grant was officially treated as dangerous.

Lena stationed a patrol car outside the garage.

The Iron Rites did more.

They parked their motorcycles around the building in a silent circle.

No one drank.

No one shouted.

No one carried weapons.

They simply stayed.

Some sat on folding chairs beneath the security lights. Others repaired engines through the night. Bear stood at the gate, refusing to rest.

Sarah watched from the apartment window.

“I used to think they were the reason Daniel changed,” she said.

“They weren’t,” Mack replied. “I was.”

Eli fell asleep on the couch between them.

Near midnight, Bear asked to speak privately.

He told Sarah what he had seen outside the bar and confessed that he had remained silent.

Sarah’s face lost all color.

“You let everyone call Danny a drunk.”

“Yes.”

“You let my son grow up believing his father killed himself.”

“Yes.”

Mack expected her to scream.

Instead, Sarah walked to the window.

“Why are you telling us now?”

“Because fear made me useful to Grant. I don’t want to be useful to him anymore.”

Bear had recently remembered the name of the waitress working at the roadside bar the night Daniel died.

Nora Bell.

She had left town shortly after the crash.

Bear had found her through an old friend.

Nora now lived in Ohio.

She remembered Daniel and Grant arguing.

More importantly, she remembered Grant returning alone an hour after the wreck.

His shirt was torn, and Daniel’s leather jacket was draped over his arm.

Grant gave Nora two hundred dollars and asked her to say Daniel had taken the truck keys.

She refused.

The original investigator never interviewed her.

“Will she testify?” Sarah asked.

“She’s afraid.”

“Of Grant?”

Bear nodded.

Mack looked around the guarded garage.

For years, he had believed courage meant having no fear.

Eli had taught him something different.

Courage was choosing what mattered while fear was still present.

“Call her,” Mack said.

Bear did.

Nora answered after five rings.

Before Bear could finish explaining, she interrupted.

“I know why you’re calling.”

“Will you help us?”

May you like

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered, “Grant Harper found me yesterday.”
