The Boy in the Biker Yard

## chapter 01 - The Boy in the Biker Yard

The gray morning sky hung low over the fenced lot behind Borden Custom Cycles.

A row of polished motorcycles stood near the garage while four leather-vested men talked beside them. Their voices stopped when a thin boy slipped through the open gate.

He looked no older than nine.

His light brown hair was wet with mist. His jacket was too small, his boots were scuffed, and a dark bruise spread beneath his left eye.

The boy did not ask permission to enter.

He walked toward a small wooden motorcycle lying on the asphalt, dropped to one knee, and picked it up with both hands.

Mason “Mack” Borden stepped away from his motorcycle.

At fifty-two, Mack was broad-shouldered, bald, and intimidating enough to make grown men reconsider bad decisions. A black leather vest covered his sleeveless shirt. The name patch over his chest read MACK BORDEN.

“You lost, kid?” he asked.

The boy stared at the wooden motorcycle before looking up.

“My mom said I had to give this to you.”

Mack’s expression hardened.

He had never seen the child before, but something about the boy’s eyes made his chest tighten.

The boy held out the toy.

Mack accepted it carefully.

The motorcycle had been carved by hand. Every tiny detail—the raised fuel tank, the crooked handlebars, the small star scratched beneath the seat—looked painfully familiar.

Mack had watched his son carve that same star into everything he made.

“Where did you get this?” Mack whispered.

“My dad made it before I was born.”

Mack’s fingers closed around the wooden frame.

“What was your dad’s name?”

The boy swallowed.

“Daniel Borden.”

Behind Mack, one of the bikers muttered a curse.

Daniel had been Mack’s only son.

Daniel had also been dead for nine years.

The boy pulled a folded piece of paper from inside his jacket.

“My mom told me not to open it. She said you had to read it.”

Mack unfolded the note.

The handwriting belonged to Sarah, Daniel’s widow.

There were only two sentences.
