The Man at the Gate

Chapter 03 - The Man at the Gate
Grant Harper climbed out of the pickup wearing a clean navy coat and the calm expression of a man accustomed to being believed.
He was forty, handsome in a polished, respectable way, and well known around town. His construction company sponsored youth baseball teams, church dinners, and the sheriff’s reelection campaign.
He did not look like a man a child should fear.
That made Mack fear him more.
Grant walked to the gate and smiled through the fence.
“There you are, Eli. You scared everyone half to death.”
Eli moved behind Mack.
Grant’s smile tightened.
“Mack Borden,” he said. “I should have guessed Sarah would drag you into this.”
“Where is Sarah?” Mack asked.
“She had a breakdown.”
Eli shook his head violently.
“No, she didn’t.”
Grant ignored him.
“My wife has been struggling for months. Last night, she became confused and left home. Eli ran away while I was speaking to the police.”
Mack held up Sarah’s note.
“Then explain this.”
For the first time, Grant’s confidence slipped.
Only for a second.
“She isn’t well,” he said. “You know how frightened people can become when they stop taking their medication.”
“My mom doesn’t take medicine,” Eli said.
Grant’s eyes flicked toward him.
The warmth disappeared from his face.
“Get in the truck.”
Eli grabbed the back of Mack’s vest.
Mack stepped closer to the fence.
“He isn’t going anywhere until someone tells me why he’s bruised.”
Grant sighed as though Mack were being unreasonable.
“He fell from his bicycle.”
“I don’t own a bicycle,” Eli whispered.
A patrol car turned into the lot.
Deputy Lena Ortiz stepped out.
Mack knew her. She had grown up two streets from his garage and had been one of Daniel’s closest friends in high school.
Grant relaxed when he saw her.
“Thank God,” he said. “Deputy, my stepson was taken onto private property by these men.”
“No one took him,” Mack said. “He came here alone.”
Lena looked at Eli’s face, then at his wrist.
Her expression changed.
She opened the gate but did not order Mack aside.
Instead, she knelt in front of Eli.
“Did anyone hurt you?”
Grant answered first.
“He fell.”
Lena’s gaze remained on the boy.
“I asked Eli.”
The yard became silent.
Eli stared at Grant.
His small body began to shake.
Then he whispered, “He said if I told anyone, my mom would never come home.”
Grant stepped forward.
Mack moved between them.
Lena placed her hand on her radio.
“Mr. Harper, back away.”
Grant’s mask finally cracked.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
May you like
Lena looked him directly in the eye.
“No,” she said. “But I’m beginning to understand what you’ve done.”
