Eleven Years Missing

Chapter 03 - Eleven Years Missing

Claire turned toward Eli so quickly that the boy flinched.

Nora saw it.

“No,” she said weakly. “Not like that.”

Claire forced herself to breathe.

Eli stood near the window, confused and suddenly afraid.

“He’s nine,” Claire said. “My baby would be eleven.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“That is what the records say.”

Claire’s hand tightened around the bedrail.

“What does that mean?”

Nora asked Eli to step into the hallway with Marcus. The boy resisted at first, but Marcus promised they would stay right outside the door.

When they were alone, Nora began.

Eleven years earlier, Claire had arrived at the hospital after collapsing during a charity gala. She had been thirty-two weeks pregnant and bleeding badly. Doctors performed an emergency delivery.

Claire remembered pieces of that night.

Bright lights.

A nurse telling her to stay awake.

A tiny cry.

Then her father’s voice.

By morning, Claire had been told her son had suffered fatal complications.

Nora said that was a lie.

“The baby was premature, but he was stable.”

Claire’s face went numb.

Nora continued.

Everett Whitmore had arrived before sunrise with the family attorney and a private physician. He said Claire was emotionally unstable. He said the child’s father was dangerous. He said the baby had to disappear before the press learned Claire had been involved with a hotel maintenance worker.

“Daniel wasn’t dangerous,” Claire whispered.

“I know.”

Claire looked at her.

“You knew him?”

“He came to the hospital.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“My father told me Daniel never came.”

“He came every day for a week.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Nora’s next breath rattled.

“Your father had him removed by security.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Nora explained that the infant had been transferred under a false name to a private clinic. Birth records were altered. A death certificate was prepared.

But Nora kept one piece of proof.

The photograph.

“I took it before they moved him,” she said. “I thought someday you would need to know he had been alive.”

Claire sank into the chair beside the bed.

“Where did they take him?”

“I didn’t know. Not then.”

“Then how does Eli have the picture?”

Nora looked toward the hallway.

“Because years later, your father came looking for me.”

Claire froze.

“He was sick,” Nora continued. “Scared of dying. He gave me the paper you’re holding. He said the child had been placed with a couple in Pennsylvania. He told me their names.”

Claire leaned closer.

“Who?”

Nora’s eyes filled with shame.

“My sister and her husband.”

Claire stared at her.

Nora shook her head quickly.

“They didn’t know whose baby he was. They were told it was a private adoption. They loved him. They were good people.”

Claire stood.

“Where is he?”

Nora began to cry harder.

“Their son died in a car accident two years ago.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

“Son?”

Nora reached for her hand.

“Claire, listen to me. Eli is not your son.”

Claire looked toward the hallway again.

Nora squeezed her fingers.

May you like

“He is your son’s little brother.”

And for the first time in eleven years, Claire learned that the child she had buried in her heart had lived long enough to become a father.
